Your favourite inserts/holders for a larger lathe
I've almost got the 21" DSG running, so need to get a couple of larger tools for general turning and facing to get me started. I don't want to be messing around sharing often used tools with my smaller Takisawa lathe (and they probably aren't ideal anyway).
The only larger inserts I've currently got are WNMG0804's so I could grab a larger holder for those, but also thinking that SNMG and a PSSNR holder looks like a very useful style.
Mainly for use on steel, as thats 99% of what I work with.
Any recommendations from those of you who run larger lathes? What turning/facing tools do you use or like the most?

95% of the od turning i do at work is with a TNMG16 or similar sized WNMG. 0.8mm nose rad for roughing, 0.4mm rad for finishing. Square insert in a 45 degree holder for chamfers.
For boring we use TPMT inserts in sumitomo anti vibe boring bars mainly, these are probably a bit too much $$$ for a home shop but the same insert in a std bar would be fine. For larger bores we go to a tnmg or wnmg in a 40mm+ boring bar.

Thanks Snapa.
Think I've got some TNMG's kicking around somewhere. Any particular holder style you mainly use for those for OD work?

The holders we use have a 93 degree approach angle. I would also go with holders that use a clamp to hold the insert down, I'm not a fan of the ones that just use friction to hold the insert in place.
Most of the tooling company's often have specials where you can get a free holder if you buy a pack or two of inserts. considering a holders is $90-100 and a pack of inserts is $100-150 its a pretty good deal.

Thanks for that.
I've ordered a couple of cheap 32mm shank WNMG clamp style holders from AliExpress for starters, along with a cheap MSSNR holder and some SNMG's for chamfering.
I see that M&G have the 93deg TNMG holders in a 25mm shank for $35 each so will grab a couple of those too and see which style I like best before shelling out for some decent holders and inserts.

I think the cheap holders will work fine for hobby use. There isn't enough difference between a cheap and expensive lathe tool holder, for it to matter for hobby use.
