Good to hear that Hare & Forbes want to help. The damage looks like a casting flaw and providing it's not really hollow in that section it shouldn't bother it. The more you pay the better quality you will get, but at the same time $3K plus is $3K plus the lathe should be able to function correctly and be accurate.

I purchased my AL320G 7 years ago and whilst I had no 'sand in the headstock', the carriage was quite stiff in some places on the ways.
Your issue seems to be more severe than mine.

If I read this correctly, the area of concern is where the carriage gibs contact under the far side bed way.
In my case I oil stoned this 'underside' smooth and the carriage moved fine after that.

It seems to be common that many moving parts are not well lubricated from the factory - I took the top off the carriage and liberally greased/oiled most things and that further improved the general running of the lathe.

I broke 2 lead screw gears early on (the gear adjustment nut was loose) and H&F happily replaced them at no cost.
Dont despair, they are a good useful lathe and generally well regarded once the teething issues are sorted out.

Best to await the H&F person visit tho before you undertake any serious rectification work.
