Thread: Help wanted identifying carbide insert

I have an old Carboloy FEM 20S indexable end mill that takes triangular inserts of a type that I am having trouble identifying. The inserts would be 3/8 IC and the relief angle is 0 Deg on the sides, but the wiper flat has probably 15 Deg of relief with the thickness being 2.4mm approx. Fixing is by one countersunk hole. I have searched the internet and various catalogs with no success so far. As can be seen in the attached photo, it's a single sided insert with no chip breaker. Is it possible that this is a superceded style and thus no longer available?

That's a really odd one. Carboloy was bought by sandvik in the 80's i think. Will see if i have any catalogues that old in my library.

Thanks for that, Googling using the designation stamped on the brings up nothing other than a photo of a larger version, but following that link leads you to a website with various carbide inserts, none of which remotely resemble the one I have.

That to me looks like the seat an insert would sit on not the actual insert.
I suspect that the insert would be clamped fro the top not by a counter sunk screw.

So i don't have any catalogues that old in my library, so i did a google image search for "Carboloy FEM 20S" that lead me to this ebay listing.

Many thanks for the great detective work Snapatap. I have spent hours over a period of time Googling to find some (any) information on these pesky blighters. They are an interesting little device as when you look at the geometry of the tool end on the cutting edge presents at a negative angle as can be seen in the second photo from the Ebay listing.
