    Default Sharpening files

I bought a new Nicholson bastard file (made in Sth. America), I managed to dull it after a few hours of use on high carbon steel !

I tried the white vinegar etch but that has not had any effect , no good. Maybe a stronger acid is needed. Maybe the prep wasn't good enough, cleaning the grooves, I used a copper scraper.

    Any suggestions ?

If it lost its edge that quickly id sharpen it straight into the bin and replace it.

Unfortunately, the new Nicholson stuff (along with many other well-known brands) it's kinda crap...

This guy has a lot of new-old-stock files (and a ton of other stuff like taps, endmills, etc.) from back when they were made properly at very good prices https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_...oc=2&_nkw=file Based in Australia as well so postage won't kill you

I am beveling the lower edge , of old Land Rover leaf springs ( long story ) , I use a angle grinder to remove 90% then finish with a file. I don't have a linisher which would be handy for this type of job.

Thanks for the replies, yes, a new Nicholson file is only 10 bucks from Bunnings , I guess I might have to buy a few to finish this job !

    elanjacobs thanks for the link

I wouldn't expect any file to last very long on leaf spring steel.
