Default About time the ryobi bench drill goes out the window

I was looking at fixing my ryobi 5 speed bench drill's capacitor but now im going to chuck it out and buy a new machine, i see the hare and forbe drill presses get a good review they are $400-$500 which would be my maximum budget but i am hopping to get something around the $300 mark

Im in lock down so it needs to come by mail, i almost ordered a full boar pedestal model but read a bad review

I don't need a super dooper duty professional model i just want a machine that will punch 50mm holes through 30mm steel as a maximum example

But i also dont want another weak toy like the ryobi which struggled drilling a 12mm hole

Can someone let me know of a good brand or two, looking to order one tomorrow

I would just go a hare and forbes model but they are only 8-9 suburbs away and its up to a 10 day delivery wait and recent orders thru aus post currently have me pulling my hair out waiting on stuff to be delivered

This ( https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/D166 ) will run your 50mm drill, it might be a little over your $300 budget though.

Unless you go basket case used, you're unlikely to find a mag drill for your budget either.

The way hare and forbes mentions the second link is a much better drill press over link 1 makes me want to order that drill press

I don't know whether I would call is "much better"

The differences between the Medium duty and HD drills from H&F seems to be
    The HD DP has
    - less distance between spindle and table
    - bigger table
    - an 18mm greater throat dept
    - 5 mm more quill travel
which probably accounts for the 10kg difference
Otherwise the two drills look the same

Same motor, same speed range, same morse taper, same column thickness (Important)

I doubt whether either of your candidates will be happy drilling 50mm holes in 30mm steel though.

Buy the cheaper model and a 50mm annular cutter with cheap arbor. Much less demanding on the machine than trying to run a 50mm conventional drill.

Check the specifications on that model:

It is very easy to get carried away with specs. All the drill presses you have linked to are nothing more than entry level machines in my opinion. Hare and Forbes are notorious for inflating the price on their equipment, even more so post COVID as their big gear sales are down and they are trying to make it up with their consumer lines. None of those machines will effectively run a 50mm rotabroach as the piddling little A section belts are usually driving off the smallest diameter motor pulley to get the speed down and cannot transmit adequate torque to allow the broach to bite properly. 50mm holes in 30mm steel is some heavy duty work and I'm not sure why a back yarder such as yourself would have that need to be honest. The only way you will achieve that benchmark is with either a holesaw (slow and inaccurate) or a superdrill type boring tool (accurate and faster than a holesaw, but somewhat tedious). A decent magnetic base drill capable of 50mm diameter holes will shatter your budget too and will not work on Stainless or Aluminium and will be questionable on thin steel (magnet holding issues).
You really need to decide what size holes you need to drill on a regular basis and choose your machine based on that. Personally I would rate the two H&F machines you linked to as regular 16mm hole capacity machines and occasional 22-25mm use (#2 morse taper tops out at 23 dia, but reduced shank will go a bit bigger), but your drill bits will need to be well sharpened and lubricant used.

Cheers Guys, the 50mm hole thru 30mm material was just a example of something out of thin air that i may do once..

Using a carbide hole saw i have drilled a 25mm hole thru 10mm plate steel but it took 15mins using that little weak ryobi drill press

I could get a chinese magnetic drill they do go up to 40mm diameter and down to 12mm diameter but the annular cutters are not cheap but i actually think that may be the go
