A tale of two chucks
Hi everyone. Im new to this forum and thought I would try my luck to see if anyone might be able to help me with my problem of trying to locate outside jaws for my two chucks. There is no distinguishable markings on the actual chucks except for the numbers on the existing inside jaws.
I believe the 160mm chuck is the original chuck that came with this lathe (CQ6230) D1-4 camlock. The second and larger chuck 190mm has been sitting here for years and dont know its origin but the internals look in great condition. Probability is that they are cheap imports and it might be easier and cheaper to buy a new chuck but why not try and source the jaws. Maybe saving a dollar along the way. Not that anyone in this hobby is cheap but I am.
I have a box of various jaws I scored in an auction years ago but none fit.
Please have a look at the photos and see if you have any answers. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

With no markings at all, I suspect it will be impossible to identify them with any degree of confidence; the small circle milled in the face of the smaller chuck would have held the manufacturer's badge at some point, but that's obviously long gone.
The critical dimensions needed to possibly find replacement jaws will be the thickness of the jaws, as well as the size and position of the slots from the bottom of the jaws and probably the pitch/spacing of the spiral.
The other thing to consider is how much you'll actually be saving when you look at replacement prices. These look pretty well priced and Vertex make excellent quality for the money (you may need to modify your existing back plate or make/source a new one to mount) https://generaltools.com.au/product-...jaw-plainback/Gear cutting specialists and general engineers www.hardmanbros.com.au

Firstly welcome to the forum. The chucks are probably a Chinese brand, but they might not be. One way would be to take the chucks to a business that sells used engineering equipment such as lathes & mills and see if they have some excess sets of lathe chuck jaws that they would let you try on the spot - Covid might make it a bit hard at the moment. One problem that comes to mind though if you were successful in finding some chuck jaws is that the chuck jaws themselves are more than likely going to need to be ground to get the accuracy out of them.

All good points and unfortunately with Covid lockdowns I cant go anywhere. Just thought that someone out there had one of these chucks maybe damaged etc and had a spare set of outside jaws. You never know your luck.

Someone might well have some jaws, but without some measurements it will be impossible to tell

I have a similar sized 3 jaw chuck (TOS brand) without outside jaws.
I was able to at least find some soft jaws after measuring up my existing jaws, There are no second hand machinery dealers here at all but eventually found the jaws on ebay.

Please find attached measurements for chuck jaws. All measurements are taken with verniers. Best I could do and apologies for the drawings. I should have paid more attention in tech drawing at school IMG_1470.jpgIMG_1469.jpgIMG_1471.jpgIMG_1472.jpg

For when you can get around to look, it maybe worth trying Moyles (Mick Moyle's Engineers Supplies) located in Summer Hill.
They have been around for a long time selling used machine tool bits, parts and cutters etc and have quite a lot of stuff. Some of it is not very old (though they still have unused end mills with Brown & Sharp taper!), so there may be a chance of finding jaws for your chucks. It seems to be pretty much a one man outfit, the son of the man who ran it 48 years ago when I started buying from them, so he knows the stock and a phone call may clarify your chances of a find.

Thanks WCD
Good advise but with lockdown its very difficult at the moment. I have been PMd by another member who might have a set for the larger chuck. I will pull out my box of jaws and go through them. Maybe someone else on this site might need some. I will get some photos and measurements.

Just want to send a big thank you shout out to forum member Stix012 for sending me a set of outside jaws for my 190mm chuck. Perfect fit.
Thats why I believe these forums are a great source of information and support. An online community willing to share this crazy hobby/lifestyle we find ourselves in. With lockdown, I would never have been able to source these jaws.
Still on the lookout for jaws to fit my 160mm chuck. Lets see if theres any more jaw skeletons in members closets.
