Default Help with Fair price for small surface grinder

    Hi there

I have an opportunity to buy a surface grinder from a local I know but neither of us really know what a fair price would be. It came with another purchase he made so we don’t even have a price he paid. I know very little about it other than it is a small 240v unit that has not seen use for a fairly long time. The magnetic table is there as well and I have just the photos attached. I understand it is not a high end machine and am looking for hobby use only. Given it is a cheaper brand etc are there particular things I should look over? I know there is not a lot of info here but based on what you can see would anyone be prepared to suggest a reasonable value?

    Thanks
    Ian

Just looking at the new price of over $4000.00 , it seems that the one you are looking at could be worth up to half that.
Realistically I would think upto $800.00 would be a fair price if everything works as it should, I it needs work done to get it operational then the price would probably need to be adjusted to suit.
If parts are required they should be able to be sauced, there's not a lot of difference between that grinder and the current model for sale.

Being that the ways have been exposed a long time and the table is currently sitting on a concrete floor. Id be reluctant to pay more than $500

Is that way as rusted as it looks? It looks bad in the picture. Whats the bottom of the table look like?

If you want a project I'm thinking $300*.
If you want a grinder I'm thinking keep looking.
I'm assuming the table was taken off for good reason and there is much work in getting it back to close to factory. But that's a wild guess.

*Depends a bit on just want you want from a grinder. If you just want something that can make things "look pretty and be pretty close" as apposed to "hold a 10th"** then its worth more. As always location comes into it. I have no idea what your chances are of finding another one locally, so while its easy for me to say "keep looking" that maybe a long wait.

**ok I've no idea if one of these machines could ever be expected to "hold a 10th" it's an expression.

You also need to test the chuck to see if it works.

Thank you to all who have replied - excellent points of view. I will give it a good look and see if there is a machine there that can be used without too much clean up. If not I think it can stay there - I am not after a bigger project. To be honest I have mostly worked around the situation I was looking at surface grinders for so it is certainly not a need and I have plenty of other tools that I can keep saving for....

    Hi Guys,

Wrong side of the globe but a similar machine locally went for £125 ! It would have been in my shop if I'd known about it sooner ! In better condition as well no rust anywhere just old battered paintwork and needed a new wheel, the one on it had a chunk out of it.

I'm with the others. 150-350buck! As far as the machines condition and subsequent performance (and the assumption that its complete with no broken parts). Get some rust removal gel by rusted solutions and stack it on any way that is rusted. Wipe it off with a rag (under no circumstances use an abrasive or power tool here, rags and elbow grease only). You may need to repeat this several times depending on corrosion. Oil it. Put it back together and see what sort of accuracy it produces. You may be pleasantly surprised. Course you may also be disappointed so its important not to over capitalise on the purchase price.

Machines seem in fairly short supply at the moment so local prices are a little odd. Even a fairly worn little SG may fetch more than you think. IMO, certainly more than a few hundred bucks. If all the parts are there and it cleans up (be careful of abrasives) you may have a nice little machine there. If you can get it for a few hundred then I'd say it is a bargain almost no matter what condition. Even a worn SG can be a very useful tool I reckon - all depends on your tolerance of tolerance I guess. If it works and you can get it for under $500 I'd say it was a total steal.

    Just my opinion.

    Greg.
