That looks to be a unipolar stepper driver. Theses days a driver module for the more common bipolar steppers are crazy cheap to the point where you wouldn't bother making your own. Fore example a dual H-bridge L298N board is $7 off Ebay.

Would be interested if you can dig up the power supply circuit though.

    Hi Russell,

I'm getting a bit out of touch nowadays with steppers and such. Now you mentioning Lm297 and Lm298 chips !
I have several kicking about but I've never used them. I didn't know what they were until you mentioned the number, so I looked up the data sheet.

I also found some other info. Unfortunately Not from the same project, but the picture looks similar. As far as the power supply is concerned, it was a linear one fed from a transformer, about 4 amps I think. I actually bought a transformer for this project from a firm in Halifax. I'm fairly sure that I still have it somewhere. It quite big ! It stands about 7 or 8 inches high by about 5 inches square. I'll try and find it and take a picture of it.

This is the picture of one I found.
The one that I was looking for had a stepper motor driving a screw, but similar in appearance.
    Best Regards:

I've got tubes of both from my uni days, of which I used very few. The L298 is such a neat chip I was certain I'd find many uses for it.

Turns out that when you actually look, there's quite a lot about DIY EDM, the simplest looking to use a linear PS and an R-C circuit to generate the sparks.

    Hi Stuart,

Brilliant detective work, yes those are some of the articles that I remember ! They have been somewhat updated though. Thankyou for finding them and the links. I've re-downloaded them so at least they are now current data.
    Best Regards:
