Default Help requested sourcing a spring

Gentlemen... Concerning an older Ryobi BD12 bench drill belonging to a local men's shed;- we have a broken flat coil return spring on the quill; I can't find a replacement (parts no longer available) & the local spring maker in Cairns doesn't have any material that small (7mm x 1mm material, it fits in a 42mm OD housing). Unfortunately the spring has failed right in the middle of it's length, so it's not re-useable).
I've found heavier gauge & size units are available but it's not really feasible to try & fit such a large
item to a smallish drill. Any ideas?
Obviously this doesn't stop the use of the drill, & we have others; one smaller & one larger.
    Thanks...

    Hi there,

As a last resort could you machine a new housing to fit a larger spring?

Would an 8mm wide spring fit inside cover?

    The 40 x 6 x 0.7mm will probably work if you use a 1mm shim.

"This Old Tony" on utube has a good video on making springs , he uses piano wire and his lathe.

While not the most aesthetically pleasing or technical solution, I have seen many a drill press with the spring removed and a cord wound around the shaft that raises a weight when the handle is rotated and simple gravity performs the opposite when the handle is released.
If all other option amount to dead ends, bush mechanics comes to the rescue.

    Default Drill Press Spring

By crikey, you blokes come up with some good leads & ideas! (My prior internet searching was fruitless).
Many thanks to Reidy41 who pointed me straight to an Aussie supplier that I'd not seen before, which hit the jackpot... the part was ordered tonight. Thanks also to the several other members who suggested alternates. I was going to resort to a bungee cord into the shed roof structure if all else failed.

[As I seem to be 'Mr. Fixit' for a lot of stuff that fails at this Men's Shed, repairs can get a bit frustrating at times. The genuine & random minor breakages (as this broken spring) or machine failures are one thing, but what really pisses me off are the unreported faults, where Joe Blow just puts the dust cover on & walks away after breaking something due clumsiness or downright angry use of a machine. This has happened a couple of times. Could be dangerous to other members too.
    Sorry... Rant over]
