SNMG160608 milling inserts
Hi all,
I bought a Valenite facemill at an auction a few years ago. It has 3 square carbide inserts on it. When I bought it most of the corners on the inserts were used and I have finally used up the remainder.
My local tooling supplier, who is very helpful, confirmed that he thinks the inserts are SNMG160608. However he said that they are a very old specification insert and he is unable to source or supply them.
He did a Google search for suppliers as well as consulting various insert catalogues and came up empty handed.
I have also tried online searches and I did find an a possible seller in Indonesia. I did look at trying to buy some from him but it seems almost impossible.
Does any body have any suggestion, as I really like the finish this facemill gives.
I do have two Kennametal facemills and I just can't get the same standard of finish with them.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

What about SNMG 542 (SNMG 150608 in ISO)?
Specifications here: https://www.secotools.com/article/p_...20?language=en
Might be worth a measure of your current insert, the telling number for me is the IC (inscribed circle) of 15.88mm.
SNMG 542 would seem far more likely to be the original designation for Valenite, given they were originally an American company before Sandvik bought them out in 2002. And I highly doubt Sandvik would have changed them to using metric designations after that purchase, they would have lost the market of the 'good old boys' who just can't get the hang of that commie foreign metric thing.
I wouldn't actually be surprised if SNMG 16xxxx doesn't exist at all, other than people in metric countries measuring SNMG 5XX and thinking they must be 16mm..... Of course, I could be wrong, but it seems like most of the common 'metric' designated inserts are often actually imperial in size, and just denoted by a nominal metric whole number. Like for example CCMT 09xxxx - the IC is actually 0.375" (3/8") or 9.525mm...
Proprietary specials may well be true metric, if they come from a Euro manufacturer....
If that works, you're spoiled for choice on eBay US using the SNMG 542 number, and SNMG 150608 also gives hits elsewhere - plus I'm sure your supplier will be able to get plenty, including perhaps a single for a size check before you buy a pack.

What is the part number of the Facemill? I have a 1985 Valenite catalogue that may have the insert listed for the particular cutter that you have.

SNMG160608 milling inserts
Guys thanks for the quick replies.
I have measured the inserts and they are averaging 15.88mm square. They are 6.34 thick with a center hole of 6.48 to 6.5mm.
The data on the face mill is
VALENITE 3TI
MSN757015R327F
ECCNO-MI ZE
I'm trying to get a clear picture of the data on the facemill but so far I am not having much luck.

Jekyll and Hyde, Techo 1 and Snapatap, thankyou for your help with this.
Believe it or not I had been looking for inserts for this facemill for almost a year, trying to work out what was the correct designator for it, googling etc.
My local tooling supplier is able to get some inserts from Kyocera for me. The price is surprisingly good also at $12.40 plus GST. Very competitive with eBay prices ex America especially when freight is taken into account. Given that these inserts have 8 usable corners each I think that is a great deal.
I'm not sure why i get such good surface finish with this facemill compared to the Kenametal ones I have. The geometry is different but the Valenite weighs 2.85kg and the Kennametal 1.55kg. I wonder if the extra mass helps.
Once again thanks guys. I hope to be able to provide similar help to other forum members in future.

Hi Jacko, Guys,
The centrifugal effect of the greater weight seems to make a big difference ! At least this is what I've found with my disc based fly cutters, particularly with an interrupted cut.Best Regards:

Kyocera make good milling inserts, we use a few at work. That price is about right for old style milling inserts.
