    Default Got a promotion...I think

In the space of 2 weeks, 2 of the older guys at work (including the foreman) are leaving and taking nearly 30 years of combined experience with them, so I've been upgraded to the large gear hobbing department. My new toys will be a pair of CIMA P5s, a Modul hydraulic, a Seiwa CNC, possibly a Gleason CNC and, if I play my cards right, I might get to use the BIG Liebherr L1500. Training last week, this week and some of next week, then I'm basically on my own with little, if any, help available

Oh boy, is this mostly repeating jobs with good setup sheets and documentation? If its full on jobbing with only one person running 5 machines you might need some help!

It's mostly low-ish volume (5-50 parts) repeating jobs with bugger all documentation and no setup sheets lol

Once I'm up to speed with it all I'll be running 2 or possibly 3 machines at once as the cycle times can be fairly long, it's very rare that they all have jobs waiting and if they do then they just wait.

The majority of the work is pretty basic stuff, the only really tricky thing I'll have to figure out is fly cutting worm wheels

Congratulations. I think you will be up to the challenge. I hope they are paying you what you are worth, good machinists are impossible to find at the moment.

Thanks, I think I'll get my head around it; at least I have a couple of years of hobbing experience already, so I'm not starting from scratch, it's just bigger and more expensive parts now
I got a nice pay rise at the beginning of the year when I qualified, got another one last week for "pain and suffering" according to the boss so I'm certainly not complaining in that department

Can't think of any more suited for the job. Congratulations.

Another day, another machine to learn. WMW Modul ZFWZ 250 hydraulic automatic hobber today; limit switches, lights and a control panel that may as well be hieroglyphics

Work clamping controls on the lever

    PXL_20210720_224929790.jpg
Vertical travel: top and bottom ones for travel limits and vertical "home" position, no idea what the others do and apparently it doesn't matter because we never use them

    PXL_20210720_224922180.jpg
Horizontal travel. From left to right: Finish depth (micrometer adjustment on the left out of frame), roughing depth (optional, we rarely, if ever, do 2 cuts in this machine), rapid position, retract position.

Didn't get a pic of the control panel, but I found one online. Some of the icons are intuitive, some are really not

Girl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

    Default Indecipherable icons

I think I'd be grabbing the Dymo labeller, and adding some labels beside those control panel buttons

I actually drew it up as a grid on paper and labelled each one with words . Once you're using the machine it does mostly make sense and half of it is for functions that either aren't working or we just don't use anyway
