Default Removing arbor from old drill chuck

I have an old Jacobs chuck that isn't worth fixing, and wanted to get the MT3->JT arbor out of it. But of course it wouldn't budge.

My first thought was a gas torch on the chuck.

Before I could get to the torch, neighbour suggested a car suspension puller fork between the bottom of the chuck and the edge of the MT3.

Then toolmaker recommended just parting it off in the lathe. My parting tool isn't that good, so turning the back of the chuck down was next best idea. While it did take some time to do, it was a pleasant task:

    Hi Nigel, Guys,

The normal way that the JT arbour is removed is to open the chuck jaws and drill a hole in the back of the chuck and knock the arbour out with a punch. When drilling the back of the chuck, you will know when you are through when the drill breaks into the cavity under the arbour.

    Much easier !

I agree with John on that and had to do the same thing a few weeks ago. I recorded what I was doing so will be releasing a video on it around the 30th, after I've finished up doing the Waldown pulley upgrade.

Safely clamp and drill a large hole on the drill press?
Or remove lathe chuck, tap MT into spindle and drill out using tailstock?

Either way, the drilling would be faster, but gently turning down in the Hercus was nice.

    Hi Nigel,

I think you are missing the point, you already had the chuck in the lathe spindle, a 1/4" drill in the tailstock, drill a hole in the back of the drill chuck, remove and then sit the chuck arbour down on top of your vise jaws and using a punch through the hole give the arbour a smack with a hammer. It will pop out easily. At this point you will have both a good JT arbour and a repairable chuck if you wanted !

I've done it the other way round as well ! A drill gripped in the lathe three jaw chuck and the errant drill chuck, this one on an MT2, in the tailstock.

Also once you have a hole through the back of a drill chuck it makes it easy to swap things if you need to. For instance, my 16 mm Jacobs won't hold a 2.5 mm drill, but my Rhone 12 mm one will, same arbour taper ! So its easy to swap them as needed.

It's out now for those interested - I removed the arbors from a couple of chucks, one by using wedges and one by drilling a hole in the back.
