9/32 hex rod
I have been trying to find 9/32 hex steel rod for a batch of 3000 nuts I have to make. Does anyone know of a source that can supply free machining stock in lengths 1 metre or above, prefer a local supplier but am willing to import if necessary.

Try these guys too -
https://www.milltechmartinbright.com/products/
They produce a lot of this sort of stuff, so there is a chance that your local steel supplier buys from them.

9/32 appears to be the tricky part of the equation.... 5/16 would be easy it seems. Interestingly even many of the American suppliers of hex bar seem to jump from 1/4 straight to 5/16, seems 9/32 is an irregular size (story of my life, needing sizes that don't exist).
I make 9/32 to be 7.14mm, and Bright Steels in Braeside (Melbourne) list 7mm hex bar as a stock size. Not perfect, but might be workable to use a 9/32 spanner on depending on required tension? Just a thought.

9/32 hex
I actually got a quote from a mob in Victoria, to make 3000. Trouble is, if I take that, it would cost $3500 for something that doesn't sell that well(probably represents 30 years of stock). If I do less quantity the price goes up like a rocket and I'd have to sell them for about $5 each(be buggered if I'd pay that much for a tiny little lock nut). If I do it myself on my Index cam autos(excluding my labour) it's only a few Hundred, which I can live with.

Perhaps try Classic fasteners (https://www.classicfasteners.com.au/) they might even have a reasonable price for your 3000 nuts.
