1/3/8. 4 TPI ACME Leadscrew
Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a source in Australia for leadscrews. I want to replace the worn out lead screw on my old Macson.
It's a 1/3/8 - 4 RH. I haven't been able to fund anywhere in Aus that sells them that big.
Thanks in advance

I know McMaster over in the US have them (in either 3 or 6ft lengths). Someone like Shipito might be able to do an assisted purchase for you but the freight will add several $100 to the price I would think. I doubt you will find that size easily in Oz as the place has been metric for around 45 years...
Plan B might be to get someone to make one for you. How long does it need to be?

As far as a leadscrew for a 60 or 70 year old lathe, I suspect one shall have to be made for you.

Only seen one myself but that was a leadscrew on a smallish lathe that was also used for power feed via the half nuts (no keyway). I made a replacement and after doing that I'd not do it again.
IMO the USA is the place to go for this as there are a number of companies that do acme threaded rods & nuts in various grades of precision. But it will cost.
Alternative, see if you can get someone to run one off on a CNC lathe for the acme threaded section and do the ends etc yourself. Should be a pretty easy programming job really. Might need to be re-set once or more for travel length/stiffness but that's do-able. Not by me though.
PDW - now stuck in Sydney for the foreseeable future...
