Steelfast bandsaw lubrication
Hi I have a steelfast bandsaw and I was wondering what is the correct lubrication to use for the bearing on the top wheel (first picture) and for the bush on the cone pulley (second and third), it looks like it has had grease in it, but I would have thought that oil should be used is this correct?

In that situation I would have said grease as oil would run out.

Based on the photos alone I suspect that grease would be used, but they appear to be sealed, if so, would not require further lubrication unless there is something else on the shaft. I will look at my saw tomorrow. Alan

Hi Guys,
At first glance I too would have said oil ! The bearing probably only has a seal/shield on one side, so a light grease.
Often the bearing manufacturer will specify grease for low speed running and oil for higher speeds.Best Regards:

Cheapest insurance would be to replace with sealed bearings.

I have played with a couple of these whoever said replace the bearings in the top wheel with sealed ones is spot on. The other lubrication point is for the back gear mechanism and that should be the same oil as you put in the gearbox because that is where it ends up. You only need to lubricate it when you are using the back gear as it doesn't rotate unless you do.

Have checked my Steelfast bandsaw and all visible bearings appear sealed units. Alan

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will end up replacing the top bearing with a sealed unit down the track.
C-47 Your bandsaw appears to be a later version than mine.
I was thinking that it would be similar to the back gears on my Hercus lathe, only needing to be oiled when used.
