Question Can someone recommend a transport company for Mill and Lathe transport in Melbourne?

    Hi Friends,
I am looking for an excellent transport company to bring a Lathe and Mill to my garage. I live in the eastern suburbs of Victoria, and I am getting the Mill and Lathe from Dandenong to my home (about 30km transport). If the Lathe/Mill comes with a pallet, how do you take it off? Each of these machines is about 800kg heavy.

    Thanks
    Malinp

In the past I've found a reputable taxi truck company with tailgate lift and a pallet truck to pick up and drop off. I've then gone to a hire place like Kennards and hired a gantry type crane to lift the machines off the pallets. If the machines are expensive or the sites are difficult to pick up or put down at, more thought may be required.

Thanks, Micheal, for this helpful info. I hope someone would recommend me a reputable truck company to get the equipment to my garage. After that, as per your suggestion, I can use a gantry type crane to lift the machines off the pallets.
    Thanks

    Default e-go

I used e-go based in Dandenong South. They will do door to door . https://www.e-go.com.au/home.do;jses...1E94404877989C

You might have to ask them if they have hiab trucks. I got a Douglas shaper delivered to their Dandenong South depot and I picked it up with a trailer.

    Whats your access like?
I've done something north of 600kgs with a ute and an engine crane, but I've also used Total Crane Trucks a few times, that's far more relaxing.
Few years old now but he used to be about $100 an hour, minimum 3 hours, depot to depot. Depot to depot means if possible you want someone that is close to the Dandenong end or your end, Total is out that way somewhere I don't think the depot is in Berwick but I could be wrong.

There was a guy on the forum that used to hire a crane truck but I haven't been able to find it.

Hi Stustoys, There is about a 30-degree slope from the main road to my garage. The entry point is 2.3m high and 4.5m wide. Thanks

At 800kg each, and going 30km from Dandenong, I'd call Shane at Total Crane Trucks personally. Charges hourly from the depot back to the depot, which is in Scoresby if I remember correctly.

Probably cost you about $300-400, but solves your pallet removal problem (take it off while it's on the crane), and he'll skate them to wherever you want them put in your shed. Moving machine tools is what he does all day every day, and has for years. He's also correctly insured, which means you shouldn't be out of pocket in the unlikely event something does go wrong and a machine face plants.

I've used him twice, for a 1.2 ton Bridgeport clone, and the 1.3 ton Graziano lathe, and as far as I'm concerned, it's money well spent. Life's too short to get pinned under a machine or stuff around with dodgy lifting gear when he can do it in a fraction of the time, especially with the awkward uphill angled gravel driveway that leads into my current workshop.

30deg in damn steep. Are you sure about that?
Is there a flat area outside the door? as at 2.3m there is a good chance he will need to put them down outside and skate them in.

Yep, that's what he did at my place. Had to chuck down a sheet of 1/2" ply outside the roller door thanks to the gravel drive. Also had to stand there with a big bar to stop the Graziano rolling away while he unhooked the crane, as there's a little bit of slope to it at that point (not 30 degrees though!)...

Depending on the layout and height of the machines though, he might be able to sneak the tip of the crane inside, for example if he can park on the street at 90 degrees to the drive and the drive isn't too long (not an option at my place).

Yeah the lathe should be easy to get in the shed, but malinp will still need a way to lift it onto the stand most likely(or need to do some quick unpacking)
Dandenong, pallets, the big question is, is it H&F, Asset or Applied?(ok there maybe other but they are the ones that come to mind lol)

Hi Jekyll and Hyde, and Stustoys,
Again, Thank you for your suggestions. Total Crane solution looks good to me. The slope is about 30 but there is a flat area before the garage (about 2m). Of course, the garage is on level ground.

    Thanks,
    Malin

At my old work some of our timber packs were delivered by Yarra Valley Crane Trucks. Their website says they do machinery relocation as well, so maybe another one to look at.

Shane at Total Crane Trucks delivered a Macson from Narre Warren Nth to Werribee and skated it up the driveway into the garage for me a few years back and he was very good.
