Turret Mill Spindle Jog
About to re-do the machine controls on my mill, and actively checking out general mill controls.
I have seen some youtubers with spindle jog buttons, using a | Run | Jog | switch in addition to the normal start/stop.
Why ?
I will have | CW start | CCW start | Stop | buttons connected to my VFD.
A jog, if required, is easy by just selecting buttons in sequence.
What use would a jog selection provide ?
Have I been missing out on something all these years ?
Keep well,
John.

Typically I use jog to slowly rotate specific sides/point of workpiece or bits into view eg for checking clearances etc Don't use it much but glad I have it on my mill. Must set it up on my lathe next time I'm messing with its VFD.

Remember you can have your jog set to its own Freq. Depending on your ramps times you could be past that freq pretty fast using two buttons.
I haven't missed not having one, but if I used the lower speeds more often* or had a larger mill that wasn't so easy to turn over by hand I can see it would come in handy.
*I cant recall how hard it is to turn my spindle by hand in "low range" as I use the VSD to slow the spindle down for anything I have been doing lately.

I use jog for tapping, and using a coaxial indicator.

Interesting and will be following along as I'm just about to do my control panel and bought a 10 pack of momentary buttons green and red.
I've always just turned the spindle by hand.

Thanks for all the responses.
Apologies for getting old, forgot to include the speed control knob adjacent to the buttons.
So setting a speed for tapping or indicating is no problem.
Dave, I intend posting in the CNC Section re controls and cubicle.
Keep well out there,
John.

I like having totally seperate jog buttons after watching my favourite test indicator get launched into low earth orbit.
I like having discrete labelled buttons now.
