Default Is there a place where 1/2" x 1" HSS tool blanks can be bought ?

    1/2" x 1" x 4" long or 8 " long would be good .

    Thanks Kryn.

We both went and did the same thing after I posted .

I think Ive searched at least 6 times on Ebay for such sizes over the last year. A few times in the US .

I want to make some cutting tools for my Wadkin RS tool carriage . I have one that came with the lathe, second in from left .

Its for woodwork but there is some metal work Id like to try on it as well. With the correct types of grinding for such work.

Here's some pics of the type of tools and the holder.

Why not weld or braze a HSS piece to some MS flat bar?

I did think of that but welding HSS doesn't work . Ive done it a number of times and it did stay on one piece once but mostly it just falls off with the slightest pressure.

So in another experiment I brazed it . HSS to lengthen spoke shave blades . The heat ruined the cutting edge . I suppose the only way is to braze and keep the cutting end cooler .

I'd still need the 1/2" x 1" size to do that just less of it .

I did buy some of those US HSS Ebay pieces .

What did you use to weld the HSS?
I have used 2.5mm 316L stainless rods successfully a number of times.

Great . Something I may try out thanks .

I used my Mig welder with the standard welding wire. After a fail I tried one weld by heating to red hot then welding and leaving to cool slowly buried in covered saw dust with a lid . Still failed .

There's one I did before all this that held for some reason ? The later regular fails were ebay Chinese HSS used in some wood turning chisels I made.
One fell into two pieces the first try at wood turning , placed it to cut wood and the slightest pressure the welded join fell apart like I had joined it with spit . I ended up finding a brass tube and did a ram fit with hammer on anvil to join it to some mild rod that lengthened it for placement in the wooden handle .

Not 100% sure but I think these (from BOC these days) https://www.cigweld.com.au/product/c...ft-2-5-3-2-mm/ were used at a place that i worked a loooong time ago for welding HSS, they might work better than the 316L rods, you might also be able to get them in one of those handy packs of 5 or 10 rods and also pick the brains of the sales guy he might have a something more suitable.
