Would you accept a proper nipple? That nut arrangement doesn't look too convincing.
Just give a diameter, from the holes on the caliper.

Yes, if this arrangement doesn't work. It's not soldered yet - I'm hoping that when it's flooded with silver solder the nut will be held firmly in place.

Yes, just make the "nipple" out of stainless steel with a hole to fit though then TIG the end to the nipple.

That would be welding to the cable wire?
I'd be concerned that the very high temperature could detrimentally change features of the wire metal.
Mind you, I don't know a thing about working with stainless steel Bowden cable inners.

    Hi All,

Another quick update. I took the cable to a jeweler on Friday. At first she seemed a bit perplexed by what I wanted, but after explaining it a bit more she said she'd have a go at soldering it. Should be done later this week so fingers crossed.

    Cheers!

Don't really understand what the fuss is about. For a century we've been using brass nipples, soft soldered to the cable.
Excess heat will quite likely cause the cable to become brittle -just what you don't need at that point. The jeweller will no doubt use silver-solder, hopefully the lowest temp she has in stock. Just ensure the strands are spread out within the nipple countersink - that's what really provides the strength. (and maybe heatsink the cable too)

What you're suggesting will be Plan B! The reason I went with Plan A was because (according to what I've read online) it will be difficult to solder to stainless steel.

If it failed. PM me your address and more details .ie the cable length +diameter of the hole as in previous post...
