Would you accept a proper nipple? That nut arrangement doesn't look too convincing.
Just give a diameter, from the holes on the caliper.

Yes, just make the "nipple" out of stainless steel with a hole to fit though then TIG the end to the nipple.

Hi All,
Another quick update. I took the cable to a jeweler on Friday. At first she seemed a bit perplexed by what I wanted, but after explaining it a bit more she said she'd have a go at soldering it. Should be done later this week so fingers crossed.

Don't really understand what the fuss is about. For a century we've been using brass nipples, soft soldered to the cable.
Excess heat will quite likely cause the cable to become brittle -just what you don't need at that point. The jeweller will no doubt use silver-solder, hopefully the lowest temp she has in stock. Just ensure the strands are spread out within the nipple countersink - that's what really provides the strength. (and maybe heatsink the cable too)
