Black friction reduction anti corrosion at home
Hello all
I am working on a 48 Indian and they have exposed kick start gears. It got me thinking. Is there a practical way to stop the gear corroding, give it a nice black colour and help with reduced friction.
Something like metal blacking comes to mind if the right finishing oil was used. I am keen to do this at home. Even if I decide not to go this way on this gear I would be interested in options. I am always keen to learn. Please share your anti friction recipes and experiences.
Thanks Steve

Even the very best commercial metal blackening/bluing will not resist metal on metal contact and it will eventually rub away. About the best you can do is keep a thin layer of oil on it.
Heres my DIY metal bluing thread that might give you some ideas.

Hi Steve,
from memory, the '48 Chief had a silver coloured kick start lever and gear. I would get it nickel plated to prevent rust or corrosion. It won't help much with friction reduction, but drylube will. The kind used on off-road bike chains. That will also prevent corrosion as long as it is there - so regular squirts are in order....
oh, just noticed your question of doing it at home: Janekit in Sydney sell "electroless nickel" plating kits. I use them quite a bit and they work very well.Cheers, Joe

Chromium nitride would probably work a treat (excellent corrosion and wear resistance, as well as reducing friction), but it's not the kind of thing you can DIY
