Easson & Sino DRO Scale Compatibility ?
Hi All, Does anyone know if Easson and Sino DRO Scales to Readers are compatible or not ?. I have just bought a Turret Mill with an Easson ES10 2 Axis Dro on it. I have a brand new Sino SDS6-3V 3 axis DRO that I've had stored in a box since I bought it nearly 8 years ago. I plugged the Sino into the Easson scales on the mill this morning and it seemed to work ok, I only did basic travel movement on the X & Y. What I was wanting to do was use the Sino DRO reader on the mill and buy one scale to suit the knee (Z axis). I have scales for the Sino which are 320mm, 420mm, 720mm but none really suit as according to the original advert the knee travel is 445mm so a 520 or 550 scale would be more suitable. I could go the other way and buy an Easson 3 axis reader and one scale to suit the knee, but it will be a bit dearer. The Sino scales are KA300 and the one Easson scale I looked at had GS100350 350mm which from what I could find out it's a GS10 scale. Also does anyone know where I could find an Easson ES10 manual I looked, but had no luck. I thought I might use the Easson reader on something else one day. The picture of the Sino reader is the exact same one that I have. Which is better quality too the Easson or the Sino ?. I know the Easson are dearer than the Sino on the Machinery House website, but I might be wrong but it looks like the Sino has more functions.SINO SDS6-3V.jpg
Thanks in advance.Last edited by steran50; 28th Mar 2021 at 01:35 PM. Reason: Which is better quality

Hi Stewart,
I think that they are all very similar if not the same guts, its probably just the software that has changed over time. In the manual that I have for mine there is a table describing three different scale types with each having a different pin out. You choose which one with the setup functions.
I'm still trying to find out how this "Linear Compensation" is supposed to work !Best Regards:

I had no problems with the Sino when I had it installed, you say you have plugged it in and all works so should be fine.
If you want a 100% check, pop the cover's off the reader heads and the circuit boards are printed on for power, ground, A and B etc, then use a multimeter on the contenuity setting to check each wire on the circuit board back to the plug pinouts.
If there the same all is fine.
As for Easson I've always thought they where over priced for the same or less functions.
I have the Meister's and Sino stored away as I fitted the HXX brand 4 and 5 axis DRO's to the lathe and mill respectively around 8 years ago.
They where only $120-$160AU back then for a readout posted, but have jumped in price to over double that these days.
There was a small problem with there first ones when they came out not allowing the calculator function to be transferred to a axis, so they sent new circuit boards to me, so I'll get some years out of these, lol

Thanks for the replies. I was searching just now and found this old thread https://metalworkforums.com/f65/t201...easson-vs-sino which seemed to answer my question as well. I couldn't find anything on the web where anyone was really knocking the Sino, but did see one comment where one person didn't think much of the quality of the Sino scales. I will do that continuity test Dave just to be sure through the week sometime though from what I found in my searching just now and your replies they should be compatible. I think I will buy a Easson scale for the Z axis that way it keeps the scales the same and use the SINO 3 axis reader that I have. I found this video series on YouTube so I'm watching the Z axis one to learn how to fit the scale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fBaYBk9xeo&t=151s

I've seen that reverse knee install, would much rather the traditional scale on the column and bracket from reader head to the knee.

Either buy or make the brackets to suit, the factory brackets make life easy, but do cost.

Thanks John,
Yes that does help, a lot ! The manual is quite confusing, and it certainly doesn't mention the mm/inch difference.
Which is where I was going round in circles, checking one against the other.
I have also noticed that the table lead screw isn't totally linear. Checking a 123 block at either end shows about 3 hundredths of a thou difference in 3" inches, not that I'm going to worry about that.
Thank you for putting up with me, its much appreciated !Best Regards:

FWIW 4 or 5 years ago I bought a cheap ($200 odd including DHL delivery) 2 axis reader and scales off aliexpress to replace the Easson ES8 on my Hafpos AL340. The Easson was reading only on one axis, I didn't know if I had a reader problem or a scale problem.
First thing I tried was the simple one of plugging the new reader into the Easson scales to see if they were compatible. Not only was there compatibility but both axis were displaying again and have been ever since. A quick and easy fix for once.

Hi Bob
The reader heads are pretty robust.
I just went through this with the Meister saddle scale with a intermittent fault, it turned out to be a broken wire in the cable near the reader head.
Lucky for me there where 2 spare unused wires in the cable so I used one.
I've got to order some new wipers and will order some cable as there all getting old.

I'm the same Dave and I probably don't have much choice as the knee locks are on the left side and there is a pipe for the one shot oiler on the right so a bracket from the reader head of the scale to the knee on the left side I think is my best option. I have all the brackets for the Sino scales so I might be able to utilize them or make some and I just looked on Hare & Forbes and the Easson Z-axis brackets are about $80.00 a bit dear I thought.
Shedhappens thanks for posting those Linear Compensation Video links. I had seen something about that in my Lathes Carmar DRO Manual, but didn't really get it at the time, but those videos really simplify it.All The Best steran50 Stewart
