    Default Rope Knurl

    Rope Knurling

Visiting friends & family in Bendigo at the moment. One of them has been trying to find a 2mm Rope Knurl for a while with no luck, it's needed for making a missing a thumbs screw.

He's searched Google, it brings up pictures & plenty of links on how to make them, but no one seems to sell them. He doesn't have the tooling to make one either.

Any idea where to get one.

    Regards

Has your friend tried Accu-Trak? https://accu-trak.com/index.php

    From their website:

"We also frequently make (and keep track of) literally thousands of over run special wheels from previous orders."

They may have one left over from a previous order.

As some one who has frequented the Forums in both the WoodWork and now Metalwork versions for almost twenty years, I can't personally recall any body posting about rope knurls.

That might indicate that the manufacture of them in current times is rare apart from the possible special order situation in the above post .
I should not be surprised if the thumbscrew in question came from an old time firearm sight.

By their nature these knurls are more specialized and custom made to the knurl shape/sizing required. The knurl is turned as a female profile and transfers the pattern to the prepared male profile on the knurled wheel or thumbscrew.

This sort of work turns up on reproduction antique firearms such as the thumbscrews and movement wheels on ladder elevation sights on some models of Pedersoli rifles. I say some, as this maker faithfully reproduces even the thread sizes and knurling found on the originals. As an example the eyepiece on the ladder sight is rope knurled though it's hard to tell on the photo.A fellow shooter has the same rope knurled eyepiece on his 45/70 Quigly model. ie aka Sharps reproduction buffalo rifle.

Thanks for the replies so far, I will check with him tonight. The thumb screw is of an old woodwork plane.

There are people on the Woodwork side that recondition and scratch build wood planes. I recall a bloke called Derek Cohen was prominent in one of the sub Forums. A post in that sub forum may yield a result.
You never know ,you might be able to pick up a source for an antique spare part.
