Default Parting Off and Sutton's Viper Cutting Fluid

    Hi,

Yesterday I was parting off some 12L14 steel about 63mm OD and for whatever reason I just couldn't get it to part off right. I tried re-adjusting the height of the parting off blade (HSS Eccentric Engineering job which normally works great) to dead centre, just below etc., reduced the speed, increased the speed. Eventually I just bit the bullet and picked a speed and set the tool height to just under centre height, I still had the vibrations happening but just plunged in.

The only thing that made any difference was that I poured heaps of Sutton's Viper Cutting Fluid into the job (previously I just liberally dabbed it on by a paint brush). It was a whole new ball game, cut it like butter. I have to say I'm surprised at how much it effected the cut. Even the swarf was different, instead of little chips it was long curly ribbon only broken by me stopping the cut.

I've been using the Viper Cutting Fluid for awhile now for milling and drilling and in my cheapskate mixture I make for turning (Viper Fluid, Magic Tapping Fluid and what ever other oil I have laying around at the time - I think it saves me money) and having really noticed anything like yesterday's results. I've had the same bottle for at least 18 months so probably haven't been using it right.

Anyone else notice anything like it?

    Ben.

PS, I think its called Venom not Viper.

I usually part anything bigger than about 10 mm in diam using lube coolant. I'm no parting pro but I reckon it could be anything (even a bit of friction) that causes the tool to chatter can cause the chips versus curly output

I've got the same blade and it's a ripper. As soon as I get any chatter I sharpen the blade. That solves the problem almost every time. I just kiss the front face of the blade against the flat side of a CBN wheel for about 1 second. The blade stays in its QCTP holder. It's so easy I reckon there's a good argument for doing every time you part off.

I don't know why flooding with Venom fluid worked for you, but that's a very expensive way to part off.

    Hi Guys,

I agree it is important to keep the blade sharp !

One picture I saw the other day, the guy bragging about how good his "T" shaped blade was, showed the blade slightly cocked in the holder. That is going to cause a problem at some point.

As far as lubricant is concerned, I used some old, lemon scented lamp oil the other day ! It was at least as good as some of the other concoctions I've tried.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.
