    Just a followup,

I replaced the two bearings in the head mount with the help of a friend's 20 t press - used Koyo Model RLS 8 bearings for them as same size and specs as one's I removed - originals were stuck fast with rust and they weren't coming out without some serious grunt and creaking of the press.....the press worked a treat but she groaned a few times and I could just see things going ugly real quick...luckily that never eventuated ....new bearings re-packed and then put back into drill head - they went in ever so much easier once I cleaned up the shaft so thankfully that's sorted - but the quill was a different story.

Only one bearing (3203) was showing when you looked down it - you could not see the thickness of it and the other end had a steel dust cover washer that was jammed tight with spring steel - no way could you see past that either so took it to a bearing supplier and the bloke there provided the other bearings but said the quill usually had only one bearing and the other end probably a bush but there was no way to confirm that by looking. The washer had a bit of round spring steel firmly lodged into a square groove locking that in tight and no way easy to extract that.

So fitted the Koyo bearings this morning and took the quill to a bearing specialist in Moolap and an unashamed plug here to Paul at GLN Bearing Refurbishment Services, if you ever need some work done, I highly recommend him - anyway, he spent a while on it. It was wedged into the square groove real tight and no way to lift or prize it out so had to be cut in several places then essentially chiselled out bit by bit. A nightmare that luckily I was in the right shop to fix. Once it was cut and removed the quill disassembled under the press.....somewhat easier than the other bearings.

When it all came apart there were in fact two bearings with a spacer and each bearing was a different width. One was 0.472" and the other, a double row and 0.630" wide. Have attached some piccies of it disassembled which hopefully will show the story.

I have re-machined the groove back to what it was, cleaned up all the metal and will replace the spring steel wire with the correct fitting cir-clip once I replace the bearings. At least it will be easier to remove if I ever need to

I'm not sure how the different bearing thicknesses work or whether they were retro fitted - there didn't seem to be any consistency to the bearings such as same brands etc....never the less, perhaps given wartime shortages they used what was available and grabbed some spring steel wire instead of a cir-clip. The groove had originally been square cut when made and what happens when you fit a round bar into a square hole...gets ugly real quick.

Anyway it is what it is so I will go back to the bearing shop and get two replacements the same as what was in the quill....they can measure up the old ones and go with that but I will get shielded ones this time as was recommended given most of the removed bearings had rust on the races and some balls.

Thanks for your help and suggestions...looks like we've finally sorted this one it out.....appreciated ......Lee
