Looking for a set of small metric taps and dies
Just asking if anyone knows of anyone that sells a set of small metric (6, 5, 4 and 3mm) taps and dies which includes the FINE series.
I already have a 6 - 24 mm set of standard and fine, and a 3-12mm set of standard (no fines).
Thanks

Hi Bob,
"AVON Tap & Die" here in the UK make them ! You can buy single or multiple taps in sets, the same with dies. They are all top quality HSS steel.
https://www.avontapdie.co.uk/
No connection just a satisfied customer. I bought a set of M9X1 and a die to suit only last week. Ordered Thursday, came in the post Saturday. Plus you won't have to pay our 20% Vat.Best Regards:

I bought a set many years ago for the grand total of about $6 so you can imagine the quality ... or lack of. It has come in handy a couple of times but if you want a decent thread then don't use these.
I see you can still get similar but the price has gone up slightly.

Try Searle fasteners there in Canning vale. My go to place for nut and bolts
Bought standard 3 to 6mm taps from them. Not sure if the had fines though.

Thanks Snapey, I've seen that set on ebay, it does indeed coup a bit more but it doesn't seem to have the ones I want.
If anything it seems to supply pitches that are "coarse" than standard
eg M3 is normally 0.5 and "fine" is normally 0.35mm, whereas that set has M3 0.5 and a 0.6?
Likewise with the 4mm
Normal is 0.7 and fine is 0.5, that set has M4 of 0.7 and 0.75.
I might just buy sets of what I need - for the moment I just need M6, 5, 4 and 3.
They're mainly going to be used in brass and MS so I might just by the cheap McJng ones for teh moment.

Hi Bob, Guys,
It seems that Metric fine taps and dies are a premium price !
Either no one is buying them or that they are not recommended for new designs. The same applies to BA taps and dies.Best Regards:

Try GBR Engineering in the U.K. Bob, but get onto their own site as distinct from their eBay store. GBR Engineering Services Ltd . That way you will most likely avoid paying GST, as the eBay store always charges it, and usually more than the 10% too to rub salt into the wound. I really doubt that the GST collected is forwarded onto the ATO, the whole setup being to keep the likes of Gerry H. happy in my view. They seem to have more stuff listed on their eBay store, but if you can't find it on their site a quick e-mail enquiry gets fairly prompt results I have found, and I have found the Europa Tool brand tools very satisfactory. It also pays to go through their listings if you have the times they frequently have the same exact tool, same manufacturer and same manufacturers part number, but at different prices listed, sometimes significantly different too.
I have not bought from these people, EW Equipment, but they have some pretty good pricing, and they and GBR have the drills you want in many styles, hand taps, spiral flute machine taps and spiral point machine taps, the latter two groups in various flavours as well. I will be keen to hear from anyone who has dealt with EW, as they have some nice looking kit in the shop. https://www.ewequipment.co.uk
When I have purchased from GBR, shipping was free and reasonably prompt, but in Covid times the experience may be different. Good luck if you go with either of them,
Rob.

Victor Machinery Exchange in the US have just about every hand tap/die you could think of. You could see if buying from them is cost effective after exchange, shipping and taxes assuming they will ship to you. They do ship to Canada but we are special.

GBR used to do a lot of free shipping, well worth checking their offerings too Bob, haven't checked their current shipping policies, but check to see that you are dealing directly with them and not through eBay, or at least compare the deals both ways before committing. Cheers,
Rob.
