Trolly Jack Mod
My old trolly jack I inherited from my dear father seems to be leaking from the plunger.
Besides that, it works fine....expecially when I top up the oil.......
I thought I'd puill it out to change the seal on the plunger...It doesn't have one.....No wonder it leaks.
I thought I'd machine 2 sections on the plunger to fit 2 o-rings, making sure, they are not raised above the edge during normal operation.
Anyone else done the same thing? Did it work ok?
I don't use it much so its hard to justify a new one. I will if this fails to fix it though.
Worth a shot, i reckon.
I can get some pics tomorrow if you want. Didn't get a chance today.

Hi Steve, Guys,
Just about every trolley jack I've seen or used seems to have an oil leak I wonder if that is how they lubricate the pump shaft
I bought a new Hydraulic bottle jack from either Aldi or Lidl, I don't remember which. Its been on a shelf in the garage for a few years. Its in a nice plastic box, which was full of oil when I came to want to use it. The oil has drained out of the jack into the box over the years. One of these days I'll clean it and find out why it has leaked !Best Regards:

If the piston has no seal then its the rod seal that`s leaking. Replace that and it should be fine.
If your going to fit a piston seal I`d go for a cup seal or a "D" seal.
O-rings have a nasty habit of leaking I not supported properly.

Thanks bts,
I think you have stopped me from jumping the gun.
I will make sure there isn't any seals where the rod fits before I go any further.

I went back out the shed to check.
I found 2 very old and worn o-rings inside the rod bore.
I tried to get them out in one piece, but failed. They are completely stuffed. They broke up as they came out.
They are 2.5mm cross section and 12mm ID. Will try and find some new ones tomorrow.

Ok, the old one picture is worth a thousand words.
I thought you where taking about the main ram.
Yes just replace the two o-rings and it should be fine. Have a look at the rod and make sure there is no marks or scratches on it. Dirt and debris can fall around these areas going down and sitting on the o-rings. A light sand is always good.
What size, brand is it? Usually only see the release on the rear on fairly small jacks.

Your dad had a good eye for tools.
The K-Mart of today is NOTHING like the K Mart when your dad purchased the jack-circa late 70's.
I had one of those jacks and it worked flawlessly for years.
Yea! Taiwan , no wonder it lasted.
Kmart had some wonderful car gear. They carried yank made test tools, dwell angle meters, a mobile exhaust gas analysers and heaps of good aussie made handtools like Dawn,Sidchrome and Mummy.
I miss the old Kmart greatly.

Thanks Grahame! That made me smile....
I wish dad was still around to see that.
Still waiting for o rings. I bought 3 x 12's but they were too big. ( Only way I could think of measuring the depth of the o-ring cut out was to push some plasticene in there, but I don't have any...lol )
I wet to 2 reputable bearing business's and neither had any 2.5 x 12's....grrr. They had everything else but....must be a popular size.
Had to get some off Ebay and wait........still waiting....

I bought parts for a 25 year old Valiant from K-mart.
Steering and suspension parts were the same as current models of the time (late '80s).

Got my .22 ammo from them quite often. Actually you could buy it at almost any corner store and even the cafe we frequented down Tenterfield when rabbit shooting, had it. Walked down Gympie Road, Chermside one day with a loaded shotgun in hand to go to the gun shop once, so I could get him to remove a cartridge. The gun had jammed for some reason and was unable to unload it. Things have changed so much.
