DTI Loose Pointer
The photo shows a Mitutoyo 513-203 DTI, 0.0001 " per div.
The dial damage is me removing paint blisters, to ensure they do not obstruct the pointer.

It used to work perfectly, now you can have any number you want as the pointer stops randomly.
Got the glass off with some Workzone cloth adhesive tape, a couple of tries and off it came with a strong pull.
Took the side access cover off and I can see the spindle rotate as the lever is actuated, so the problem must be a loose pointer on the spindle.
Gentle pull with tweezers would not pull the pointer off the spindle.
Anyone with a suggestion on how to re-fix the pointer to the spindle ?
Is it possible that my conclusion is incorrect, and the problem is elsewhere ?
Keep well,
John.

The paint blisters were just there when acquired in a job lot.
I think it is just old-age and less than perfect paint application (Mitutoyo may try, but they are not perfect !).
Update:
Tried pushing the pointer onto the spindle, now works fine.
But is that permanent ?
I downloaded the parks breakdown, but the attachment of the pointer to the spindle is not clearly shown.
Keep well,
John.

DTI Pointer
Hi Electrosteam:- The pointer is on a very fine taper on such instruments. They can dislodge occasionally, for instance if the item is dropped. Push it back on carefully to the post with gentle finger pressure, as you have found. That's all that is needed & should be permanent.
You might wish to reset the pointer at zero? In which case getting the little buggers off can sometimes be an issue. There are small pointer pullers of various types that are used in an instrument workshop. I hesitate to propose the use of two small screwdriver blades behind the sides of the pointer & gently twist, if there is something solid behind to abut against. I have seen the guts ripped out of an instrument that way however....
Often times just using the nails of both forefingers behind opposite sides of the pointer & gently trying to flick or pull it off will do the trick. Then it goes 'sproyng' onto the floor somewhere....
I hope that helps your original query.

Halifax614,
Thanks for the confirmation of the friction taper fit.
But why did it not come off when pulled with tweezers ?
I think commonsense says that I just put the glass back on and use it.
If the problem occurs again, I now know how to fix it.
Keep well.

Hi John, Guys,
Its likely that the worm on the spindle is just flat tape wound on and can expand slightly causing the random stopping applying gentle pressure will cause the turns to close up slightly compressing them between the ridge under the pointer and bottom bearing. The flat tape worm is just friction secured on the spindle.Best Regards:
