Work in progress but pretty much there;
- 5mm max bending thickness
- stout materials
- angle bending die adjustable fore and aft for material thickness
- over-centre set up for locking bending die down
What might have taken somebody good at CAD a handful of hours took me 3 days!

Looks a bit like the one in the racers guide to building your own shop equipment book I have. Solid, simple design.
You may need to add an adjustable triangulation between the ends and the centre of the clamping beam.

I built it for 5mm just incase it will do 5mm ally. Steel will be limited to 1.5mm or less (Fireman Sam strooong). The handles are just a guess at 600mm long but can easily be lengthened.
I wanted to see if the 10mm angle bending die (with underside bracing) is sufficient before putting the big ugly triangles on it.

Mine has a lighter angle, maybe 6mm with a piece of flat bar welded across it to make a triangle for strength.
It also has the edge of the angle milled at 45, or someone with a steady hand grinding it with the agriculturly way it's made lol.
It works great for sheet metal 1200mm and shorter for stuff thicker.Using Tapatalk

There was a reason I originally posted about my shelves and I realize I forgot to mention it.
I haven't measured it, but that shelf material would be around 0.5 thick, and has 3 ribs length wise rolled into it to add rigidness which work quiet well for load over the 710mm distanceUsing Tapatalk

Do you honestly expect to be able to bend 5mm sheet metal on this?

Not necessarily but I had to pick a thickness as the max as it effects many of the machine design variables. As long as it does 1.3mm steel I will be happy. Any thicker ally is just a bonus.

Something to keep in mind (which I had forgot about until someone mentioned hot rolled and cold rolled) is that the figures quoted by companies like H&F for their machines is for hot rolled material.
I cannot remember the figures hot rolled is a lot softer than cold rolled. This is why people complain when their machine that is suppose to roll or bend 1.2 are having trouble.
I am not sure how it is now but several years ago hot rolled was becoming hard to get. The guys I knew that did car body work and used hot rolled were becoming frustrated that they were having to use cold rolled. A lot tougher stuff to work with.

Thanks Tony. Didn't realise cold was harder to work with. Cold rolled appears to be cheaper (and the one website I looked at) hence my desire to use it. I am currently thinking of using 1.0mm for my drawers so even cold rolled should be doable.

Typical of today, cold rolled is more expensive to make but cheaper to buy.
