Dovetail tool holder
The ongoing talk on dovetails in Reidy41's thread on economical milling, prompted me to post this up.
I've been having a bit of a cleanup/cull in my shed and came across this old tool holder that I acquired with a pallet of stuff off Ebay about 10 years ago.

It took me a little while to get it apart but once done it was in better condition inside that I expected
Not having a big old capstan lathe I'm wondering what this could be re-purposed as?
Even though the angle of the dovetail to the axis is quite steep I suppose it could be turned into a boring head.
Any other suggestions?

I will through in a suggestion as the more suggestions you get the more ideas will come up.
Could you turn the sank so it fits the ram of your tailstock in your lathe.
Fit a dead center and you have an instant taper turning tool, if you need one.

It is hard to get a true perceive of size but I thought of another crazy idea for something you may not need. It is a bit hard to explain but I will have a go. I am going to call it a sine table.
The idea that I am thinking is to bore a hole for a round bar to fit through the small round protrusion. This bar should be parallel to the base. Now make a plate with two hooks that go over the bar and grove in the other end like a sine bar.
As you push the taper up the ramp the angle of you sine table will change. Since it is very solid it would be very rigid, If you know the diameter of the two bars you should be able to calculate angles very accurately If you thread a couple of holes in the sine table you can clamp stuff to it for milling. I am thinking you could make the table about 30 plus centimeters long. At each end in the center bore a 20 mm hole. You can then put a clamp to a T nut to hold it rigidly to your mill table.
After I relooked at the picture you may be able to remove the round boss and use the hole that is all ready drilled to put your bar through, If the hole is parallel to the base which I suspect it is and you made the bar a press fit this would be a very rigid setup for a sine table.
I can see this clearly in my mind but may have lost a bit in the translation. If you want to expand on this idea let me know.
