Ultrasonic cleaners
Hi All,
I've just bought a 6lt Ultrasonic Cleaner https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/6L-Ultra...72.m2749.l2649 for cleaning Carburettors at my work. I'm trying it out at the moment with a Yamaha carby cleaning solution that you mix with water to see how it goes. I will probably order some Sonic Blue (mixes with water) from GA Spares and give it a go as I have an account with them. I was wondering if anyone here has used one to clean carbys or metal parts and what Liquid solution they've used ?. ThanksAll The Best steran50 Stewart

I've used them to clean ink drawing pens and they do that quite successfully. One trick is to put water in the cleaner but put small parts in a glass jar with solvents or what ever cleaning solution is required. The energy transfers through the glass so that you don't need a bath full of solvent or alternately, when the item is cleaned, the whole bath is not contaminated.

The 300 litre ones at work are filled with Simple Green and run at somewhere around 50 degrees. They get used for pretty much everything on the heavy diesel and diesel electric machinery.

Very cheap at that price mine cost 5 times that and half the size, I find it works well for jewellery, spent brass etc. I just use a couple of drops of detergent for most things otherwise as Michael said.

Truck wash - or if none, kitchen dishwashing detergent.
But ... with the carbs. Be careful, dry them out very thoroughly with compressed air thorough all passageways and and get some wd40 on and in them to protect. I had a bank of 4 motorcycle carbs ruined (by a motorcycle shop) by them not getting the aluminium cleaned and protected from corrosion after a sonic clean. A corrosion rash set in very quickly and they seized and become blocked. Toast. That was the first set of carbs I had someone sonic clean, and the last. I bought a sonic cleaner myself after that.

Thanks for the replies. I have watched a few video's on YouTube on Ultrasonic cleaners and had seen the glass jar tip on their. They also used ziplock bags and a small metal tin, all good ideas as you are potentially prolonging your cleaning solutions life. The dishwashing liquid and truck wash might work on some carbys with some temperature, but some carbys I've done are absolutely woeful due to the stale fuel varnish and old two stroke oil and I can't see dishwashing liquid doing much. I totally agree StrayAlien as soon as the carby is cleaned it should be washed off with something and dried out otherwise you are just going to create yourself a problem.
I gave the Ultrasonic cleaner a run today with a carby of a Tohatsu 30hp that I'm trying to save, it seemed to do a good job. I had already had the carby in a bath before I got the ultrasonic so I didn't worry about taking any pictures of the results. I will do a bit of experimenting with some household and industrial cleaners and see what results I get.All The Best steran50 Stewart
