PTO Safety Clutch Repair
Just dragged an old Howard rotary hoe out of a shed.

From the look of the twisted PTO extension/adaptor that's on it, it looks like the safety clutch hasn't been working (I found an older, even more corkscrewed one lying nearby).

That's with a 40HP tractor, I want to use it with an 85HP machine, so I really want the clutch to work.
It looks like the U-joint on the PTO shaft has been operated at extreme angles to the point where it's been hitting the nuts of the tensioning springs on the clutch, beating them and the studs up pretty badly.

I think it just needs the studs and nuts replaced. A quick Google doesn't seem to turn up any of the 4" long 1/2" UNF studs, so I'm thinking it might be quickest to make them. However, not sure how tough they need to be. Making them out of BMS is going to be easiest, or I might be able to scratch up some 4140, or I could try modifying some long 1/2" grade 8 bolts. Obviously, if I can buy them somewhere, that would be a good option. Any ideas?

Dependent on what condition the friction linings, plates and springs are in, it may be a better and cheaper option to just put a new safety clutch on. Last time I played with such things, I found that the complete units were dirt cheap from suppliers such as BareCo.
If repair is still on the cards, I would steer clear of bright mild and either modify some grade 8 bolts or use some 4140.

Try this site, they maybe able to assist with spares. A lot of the drive lines have been upgraded to stronger components due to tractors with higher horsepower.
