FYI, looking at stuff in Moyles (moyles.com.au) this morning I saw a drawer full of unused "bevel gear cutters" in various sizes.
That might help if you want to make your own, and they have a suitable cutter.

Default Planetary gears for a forklift diff - can I realistically make some??

I had a couple of days offline over the weekend, so spent some time reading about bevel gears in the old machinist's book my daughter bought for me - "Audels Machinists and Tool Makers Handy Book", published in 1941. Its a lovely book, nice clear illustrations and about 1500 thin pages.

It goes into quite a bit of detail on bevel gears and cutting them with normal involute cutters - choosing the correct number cutter and the offsetting the blank to achieve the tooth thinning. Think I've got my head around how it works now.

Good news is that I've managed to find a parts place that can get the gears for me, so I won't have to make them. Not what I’d describe as cheap, but I’ve managed to retain both kidneys.
Just have to do a bit of a repair on the carrier around one of the cross shaft holes where its a bit chewed up. I think its a candidate for filling with silicon bronze using the TIG.

I'll definitely still have a crack at making some basic bevel gears at some point though. Even if its just to get a feel for the process as I've found it quite interesting to learn about.

    Steve
