Default X auto feed for bridgeport - is (M&G) '135lbs' enough?

    Hi All,

Looking at putting an x axis feed on the BP. It is for home workshop use. mag pro sells these: X Feed 135Lbs. Power Feed_Machine Tool Access._M&G Productions, which are rated at '135lbs'. Anybody have any experience with them on a BP? EDIT: mag pro web site shows one attached to a BP ...

Some posts on practical machinist say all good with 135 so my feeling is it'll be good enough for me. But I look at the H&F ones for same: https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/M227, and they say 650 for a turret mill. That's like 5 times the M&G one ... (and twice the cost). That's a pretty large difference in specs - unless, of course, they are not comparing apples with apples.

    All comments welcome,

    Greg.

Greg 135 ft pounds is quite a bit of torque, if you have a torque wrench set it to that and pull on it, that will give you an idea of the power the drive should have.
    Is the M&G unit is 240 v ?

The HF one is 650 inch pounds, about 50-odd foot pounds. The M&G one just says 135 pounds, which is a weight not a torque so not much help.
Just thinking about the force required to manually crank the X-feed on my U2 when milling, if it needed 135 (or even 50) ft-lbs I'd know I'd left the table lock on.

Shed/Pete, thanks. Yes 135 ft lbs on the torque wrench is a fair bit. Good point both. Thanks. Not apples and apples. But, looking about it seems the M&G one is 135 inch pounds (others that advertise as 135lbs indicate inch lbs), which puts it at about 20% torque of the H&F one - if I read that right.

Interesting there is such a vast diff, but some comments here seem to indicate that it'll be okay: https://www.practicalmachinist.com/v...ed-buy-116757/

Just as well you are awake, so that would be about 11.25 foot pounds

I'd see if you can get a power rating from M&G
The H&F one appears to be rated at 90W. If my maths is correct, with no losses thats max of 12rpm at 650in lb. About 50in lb at 160rpm. It is built in Taiwan and includes the parts needed for fitting, while I'm guessing the M&G one also includes them, it doesn't show them.

The H&F unit is the unit supplied as standard on the Taiwanese BM-30 mill which is a Bridgeport clone. I haven't had any issues with it so far, it drives the table irrespective of how deep a cut I take.

Note though that the H&F unit requires 110V, in the BM-30 it's supplied from a tap off the main transformer. Can't tell from the advert for the other unit, which has no specifications listed, whether that is also 110V or is 240V - or something different altogether.

The standard transformer im a brindgeport has taps for both 110 and 240 so you should be okay either way.

fyi: I spoke to Felix at M&G. He says it is 240v. No wattage figure though - so I've pinged him pack.

My pacific mill (lagun) Bridgeport clone came with a servo brand power feed 90 series. I assume its 90 ft-lb torque.

It no longer works but surely a 135 ft-lb for home use should be sweet.

Thanks Simon - I think it is actually inch lbs, not ft/lbs. So, 11.25 ft/lbs doesn't seem like a lot ....

Mind, here is the 450 in/lb version with free shipping to Oz for only a few bucks more: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3288...3be032bdPLNrKG. And the 550 version also: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3255...3be032bdPLNrKG. A little more $ than M&G for a lot more torque, and a lot less $ than H&F for a little less torque.

So, I reckon ali express finally gets a purchase from me.

Just note the more torque the longer before the clutch slips if something goes wrong.

To round this out. I got the 450in/lb model from ali express. Link given above.

It arrived today and I've installed it. Machine is a bridgeport 2j.

I have to say, i am impressed. I was expecting something a lot cheesier and more plasticy feeling. It feels solid - cast metal of some sort. The switches feel very good. The finish is pretty good. They body might be powder coated. The stickers are not already peeling off. Bonus.

The machined parts are done well and fit beautifully on the bp leadscrew. All parts were in the box for installation.

It took a bit if fiddling with the supplied shims and adjusting backlash to get it to feel the bevel gears engaged okay in both travel directions, but, i got there. Installation was about an hour or so.

It did say it came with an Aussie plug, but actually it arrived with a travel adapter to make it suit Aussie plugs. No big deal.

The auto stop mechanism works okay, but does feel a little flimsy compared to the other stuff.

So, all in all, pretty chuffed so far. Also, it arrived in under three weeks. Landed price, $374.76. So, about $85 more than mag pro, but 3 times the torque. About $300 cheaper than H&F at 70% the torque. I went and looked at the H&F ones and had a play. Cant say they felt any better quality. Maybe metal gears inside vs plastic or something. Dunno.

    Anyways. Happy so far.

    Edit. Pic.
