Multitool
Ok I posted this in the jewellry forum nobody is looking so I will try here as well
Re Multitools 20 years ago when I purchased my first one. there was a version that mounted to an electric motor ( not a Grinder ) does any one have details of this arrangement, I can fabricate something I just thought it would be
simpler to recreate the original.
I have done research regarding the item still being available and it is not.

Are you referring to a rotary tool like a dremel (commercial ones are motors with a flexible shaft to a handpiece)?
Ebay has heaps of them from the far east if you search "hanging rotary tool". Might give you some ideas. If you could attach a drill chuck to a motor shaft, there would be heaps of options with any of the readily available flexible shafts

I’m not sure which machine you mean - maybe a foredom tool?

I don’t have any info, but I remember seeing them at a stand at Wayville, I’m pretty sure they just had a keyed boss in the centre of the drum instead of the unkeyed clamping arrangement the grinder variety has. I have the 8” grinder version if you need any measurements taken

Hi China,
Are you sure it is not the opposition brand the Linishall. that you remember?
The Tafe had them and at that time they were purchased separate from the usual 3 phase electric motor. They were 4" not 2"wide
I was interested in a belt sander at that time in 1994 and my very reason for buying the MultiTool system is that you did not need anything else BUT the bench mounted grinder.
That alone made the entire process much easier to get the tool up and running.
For the life of me , I cannot remember the MultiTool offered as sans motor purchase.
OK! It is just my opinion but after a quarter of century owning a MultiTool, the belt change system is no where as good as it has been made out to be. When it is new it is good.As it gets older and wears it bloody terrible.
The tracking cam is a twitchy thing to set true and the belt change system is in no way is as good as the other systems.
After a few years of use and wear problems in the belt tracking lever (wear in the cam yoke) and wear in the hook that holds the spring loaded arm in, under spring pressure, that continually fails to latch, turns into a problem.
That makes the belt tracking and belt change operations just plain fiddily and a PITA.
If you are brewing your own belt sander/grinder these two features are are far easier to make in other configurations.
Now days there are so many good designs around and most of them are far easier to operate and offer far better adjustment and fitting of heaps more belt accessories accessories than the venerable MultiTool.
I understand that the same bloke who designed the MultiTool went on to design the Radius Master which was a quantum leap in belt grinder design at that time.
To paraphrase Mick Dundee,"thats a belt grinder".
Just my two bobs worth.
Grahame

No definitely the Multitool, ( would be at least 25+ yrs ago) Graham I agree with the short comings, I have one with the 8" contact wheel, that I use mostly just for general work, (used to be for hollow grinding knives ) I also have a unit sitting in the shed, with no motor, with the small contact wheel, I intend to set this up as a vertical unit for flat grinding knives, I only make one type of knife these days and not very often, and have spare motors lying about so I will fabricate something.
Radius Master would be nice, but lots of money especially when I have most of what I need lying about.

For those who asked Multitool is (was) a Australian made linisher or belt grinder.

I believe the highly regarded Radius Master was designed by someone named Price, who also made the Multi-tool under the Price-Ackling brand.

To be honest, I have no idea, not really up on my GMF grinders. It came from ETSA’s apprentice school. I was going to give it a love up and VFD it blah blah blah, but I ended up just buying an A&A a couple of years ago. PM me phone number and I’ll get you some pictures tomorrow (it’s in storage at the moment).
