    Default Brake band for lathe

The time has come to replace the brake band on my lathe and I am a little surprised by what I've found when I removed the brake band. I expected to find a metal band with a traditional riveted lining such as you would find on a contracting band brake as fitted to a tractor or dozer steering clutch, but what I found looks more like a strip of fiber reinforced conveyor belt or a section of flat belt with two rivets at each end fixing it to the steel band. As can be seen from the picture, it does not appear to be a normal friction material as found in automotive brake systems. My initial plan was to get it relined at our local brake shop, but I'm having second thoughts now.

I'm not overly familiar with what is normally done in this area for lathes, but it strikes me that a rubber lining is probably not what's meant to be there. Any thoughts from the brains trust?

    Karl,
I'm not sure of the material used either, but the attached may provide some guidance as it appears similar to your photo. Alan

I took the brake band to my local brake relining company today and they are of the opinion that it looks like a proper friction lining that has deteriorated after being exposed to oil and then exploded (their term, not mine). All else being equal, I will be collecting a relined brake band before the weekend.

The brake band on my lathe broke some time ago. I have been scratching my head on where to buy spring steel strapping material.

I thought of using a bandsaw blade, but the ones I have are too narrow. Last night for some unknown reason I thought of bridgeport quill return springs. A 30mm wide one is ~$30 delivered on ebay. Going to try it out.

On my home made dyno for small motors up to 5hp I’m using a piece of spring steel from a garden hose retractor reel spring. I might even have some left - if I can find it! How long a pice do you need?

I've made a home made disc brake on my WW bandsaw.
I had to lose the alternative speed pulley but it's also on a VFD so it doesn't matter
The disc pads are from a Colt Galant and the cam action pad-disc operation is from an old hospital gurney brake.
The rest is made from Scraps including the 10mm thick Bisalloy disc (slug) I bought from the metal merchant for $3.50.

Thanks Bob, but I already have some coming from an overseas country.

Got it made. Drilled the holes with a cone shaped carbide bit on the dremel.
