I use acetone to clean the gum out, dont get it on plastic bits and maybe be careful not to get it on the paint,

All, thank you. Great info in there. I replied (on my mobile) a few days ago but it doesn't seem to be here. Apols for the late reply.

As it happens, all the dial indicators were 'fixed' simply by some mineral turps around the shaft and a little working back and forward - how simple is that! One of the millmess was seized, but, it too was just crap that has gummed and locked the shaft in place. Very happy with that outcome. So, thanks all for the advice.

The DTI was a little more troublesome. Looks like someone had been in there before. The clock hand and shaft were both bent, as was the faceplate - so the needle was dragging on the faceplate. Also, and I figured this out the hard way before you were all mentioning 'backlash' but that final gear & spring before the clock hand does need some pre-load on it. I think I put three turns on it.

While apart, I also took the opportunity to give it a dip in my non-very-expensive-at-all-but-incredibly-handy ultrasonic bath.

The end result? Everything working again just fine. Cost: $0.00.

Very happy - thanks again all.

    Greg.

PS. Some advice, when prying the clock hand off, place some cling wrap or something over it while doing it. My clock hand shot off, hit me in the forehead then disappeared into the workshop ether. It took me 2 hours to find it, and I felt sooo lucky to have found it at all ...
