Default Any experiences with H&F granite surface plate ?

Heya, surface plate time. Any comments on the H&F one?: https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/Q810. Ideally, a slightly larger one would be great, but shopping about, prices are ridiculous for (say) 900x600. And then the stands are about 50% again on the price. The H&F one, though not amazingly cheap, is certainly the cheaper of the bunch I seen.

Another contender is this guy: https://www.gettoolsdirect.com.au/ve...ate-vsg11.html. Though (everything being relative) I notice flatness at "0.009mm" is more than the H&F one at "3.253/μm". If I read that right. I like that it is vertex though.

    All comments appreciated.

    Greg.

    Hi there,

I think the measuremax plate from H&F is a grade 0 plate whereas the Vertex is a grade 00

Whatever one you choose, forget the stand. Make your own. That stand from H&F is made from angle iron and would be flimsy IMHO.

One thing you want with a surface plate is a rock solid stand.

I think ETS Engineering in QLD has some better prices but I never got the finer details.

I got my plate through a enthusiast in QLD who has been importing plates and squares as group buys.

900x600x200 (thicker than standard) was $850 to his place from memory.

I can pass on his details if you are interested. Not sure whether he is bringing more in regularly.

From memory it was around $1200 delivered to vic for a 900x600x150
    grade 00

Thanks Guys. Pippin88 - yes, some details would be great. Thank you.

simonl - thank ETS hadn't come up in my searching. Re "I think the measuremax plate from H&F is a grade 0 plate whereas the Vertex is a grade 00". Just for my info - did you mean the pother way around? The H&FG is close to 3um, whereas the vertex is 9um. ish.

The ETS site sure has some variability in their pricing! I'll call them today.

And thanks for comment re the stand simonl. I was wondering. They aren't cheap. Like MTI was asking 670 or so for a stand for a 630x630 plate and maybe $850 for 900x600. Get Tools Direct (vertex crew) where in same ballpark. I don't much go for the "Metal Tips and Tricks" channel but his "Ultimate Metrology Station" stand is pretty cool: https://youtu.be/N9H_orEXKzI

Yes you are correct. The grades are the other way round.

    Also, my plate is 1000mmx630x150

Here's a thread I did on the stand i made for mine:

Thanks for that. Very cool. Might even be something i could make.

Did you end up mapping out the plate? In spec?

    Hi mate,

No i have not. I don't really have the capability to do that but I was thinking about a rough map using a precision level but yet to attempt that.

Got a couple of other projects that are coming to a close so I may have a bit more of a play at a later date.

It's Daniel Smith that does the group buys here on the gold coast, I can attest that everything he's brought in has been top notch, The granite square he ordered me which may have been two or three group buys back was flat and parallel within 0.5 micron on the non working faces and in squareness it was dead on the tenth when compared to a self checking scraped Box square. he pays slightly more for extra thickness granite and is extremely stringent with everything being well within 00 or better and at times has delayed an order so one or two plates could be relapped until he was satisfied. The real Value in Dan's group buys seems to be in the larger plates and custom plates that no one else wants to import, I hate to admit it but I payed double what it would have cost to get my 2000mm x 1000mm plate through Dan as I used Redmond Gary years back before Dan started the group buy. a close friend got one of the 2000mm x 1000mm plates Dan Imported and Dan has one setup at his Factory while he scrapes in his Surface grinder and they are Superb.

My most recent Purchase from Dan was a 200mm x 800mm granite spotting plate, I was very implicit that all faces should only be rough ground and that it was only the one working face I cared about (they had the sides a Polished but they are not flat) as I was not Fussy about the non working sides I got this fairly cheap considering it was a custom plate. I bought this so I could scrape the Z axis ref surface To Maintain coplanarity of the flat ways and so the ref surface could be used as a platen to sit the granite square so I can bring the Y axis ref surface into squareness while scraping the rear of the knee. this plate is also going to be used by one of the scrapers in the group from Casino NSW so he can scrape the ref surface on his big #2mi

I haven't mapped out a hafco plate yet but Dean a scraper also from Casino NSW bought one and also mentioned the stand was crap but other than that he seems happy with it. I've had terrible experiences with scraping Hafco machines and I'm well aware of their bullying tactics when purchasing in china if so I can only assume a few out of spec plates have made their way across the pond.

I'll grab his email and PM you, if you're on the facbook we have a private group chat just for scraping, metrology, machine rebuilding etc. there's about 80 guys on there and I think maybe 3 or 4 also from Melbourne. Everyone keeps it muted as otherwise it would drive you up the wall with all the Notifications but it's super handy as there's always someone in that group that has an intricate knowledge of the specific machine you're working on and just for the sake of convienace I'm moving it from a group chat into an actual group.

Sounds like its all worked out though if yer still keen on the 6x9 Vertex probably go see Gamer in Melbourne. Save on freight. “Gamer.com.au” I find they do better then their list prices.

I got a H+F granite block and found a small crack in it after I unpacked it. No probs, they exchanged it though it woulda been better to find the crack before I took it home. Suggest where-ever you buy to inspect closely before taking delivery.

Thanks YBAF. I did see they had same, but they were listing as $300 more expensive than the other - so I figured they we just inflating prices. I didn't realise they were in Melb though - I thought they were another QLD crew. But, I see they are in Carrum Downs. Thanks.
