    Default What is this?

    So I've had this (what seems to be) hydraulic ram for a couple years. Got it for $20 and figured if no good then maybe able to use the parts.

    Anyway, got around to taking it apart and was surprised at what I found.

    The actual piston is all steel and undersized.

    To give you an idea, the bore is 60.00mm and the piston is 57.75mm approx.

    No seals and seemingly nowhere to attach a seal.

    This ram has a port in the base as per usual and had a hydraulic hose attached, I threw it out as it was damaged.

    Cant work out what is does or what its used for.

    Couple things;

    Is it missing a piston seal. If so, how does it attach?

    Is it some type of hydraulic damper? But it still would have a sloppy fit with metal on metal.

    Any help much appreciated!

    So, i assume with a small amount of handiwork i could convert to a standard single acting hydraulic ram?

    I know very little about hydraulic rams.
    How is it that it can have no seal?

    That ram is very similar to the rams on my Horndraulic Loader that is fitted to my Nuffield tractor - single acting as someone else mentioned. I'm sure that it could be used for a multitude of projects, even a long range hydraulic press with suitable springs to retract the ram.
