    Default Metal Cutting Saw

I am an avid amateur metal worker and woodworker. I just joined this forum and look forward to learning form your members. My metal working skills (?) have been used on cars, motorcycles, trailers, and misc. home projects. I weld with an old, Lincoln 60 amp arc welder, a newer Millermatic 180 MIG welder, and oxygen/acetylene tanks. I grind with a 7" and 4-1/2 in. angle grinders, and don't have a break for bending (yet). I cut with the oxy/acetylene tanks, cutting discs on the 4-1/2 in. angel grinder, and hacksaw.

I upped my game and just bought a 14. in. cut off saw with a 1 in. arbor. It uses a 14 in. diam. cutting disc. However, months ago I bought a Freud industrial metal cutting blade, 10 in. diam., 72 tooth, non-ferrous blade, and a Diablo Steel Demon, 8 in. 42 tooth, ceramic carbide ferrous metal cutting blade. They both have 5/8 in. arbor holes.

My question is can I use the 10 in. and 8 in. blades on my new saw? I would need to drill a 1 in. hole for the arbor, and both blades are rated for rpm's greater than the saw.

I've looked at Home Depot, and they only sell 14 in. metal cutting discs, no blades. Do you recommend some disc manufacturers over others, and do you have a recommendation for a 14 in. diameter blade (not disc) for this saw?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Wmegl,
    Welcome to the MetalWork Forums.
Firstly please bear in mind most of our members are Aussies as the forum originated in Australia. We don't have branches of Home Depot shops here. I have noticed in our local branch of our major nation diy chain store, there are Diablo timber blades but no toothed steel cutting blades.

Personally, I would recommend against using any other cutting disc than the machine was designed for.

I can't quote you feet per second cutting speed recommended for 14" abrasive friction blades but I think they will be great deal higher that those that the tooted blades will operate at. My opinion is just that but other will be along shortly who might have varying opinions.

I think an email enquiry with the Diablo company, and/or the manuafcturer of your friction saw would be a very good way to go to get the best information.

To navigate your way around the forum do this:

Goto the the top LH corner of the page and click the FORUM box with the down arrow.

That will display a drop down menu with Forum Home on the top of the list. Click Forum Home and a scroll down page will come up.

Scroll down the page and the various help pages and sun forums shall be shown.

Please read the Terms of Use on the very top of the scroll down page - they are our rules.

Please post your questions for the machinery in the general MetalWork forum. There are plenty of members who can help.

    welcome

    Grahame

Abrasive and toothed cutoff saws run at different speeds and are not interchangeable. Only use what the machine was designed for.
