⅝" (16mm) diameter knurl supplier?
I'm trying to source ⅝" diameter knurls for the holder I made years ago. I made it to take a pair of knurls I already had, but I haven't been able to source new ones in Oz. LPT Toolmakers has them in 19mm only. MSC in the US has a huge range, but postage will make it unviable.
Where do you guys get your knurls? There are sellers on eBay, but that can be a lottery. I'm happy to buy from eBay if someone has a recommended seller.
I'm open to the idea of opening up the holder to take ¾" knurls, but I'd rather not.Chris

Thanks Gents. I emailed both. Waiting to hear from Boyar.
Unfortunately Accu-Trak have a minimum order of USD100. Postage is USD15-25. That's more than I'm prepared to spend. It's a pity, as their product looks very good.
Axminster and Chronos in the UK don't have knurls in 5/8 x 5/16. If Boyar can't help, I'm heading towards modifying the holder to take ¾ x ⅜ knurls.Chris

Might be worth modifying anyway, as 3/4" knurls seem to be more common and with a larger range.

agree - might be worth modding to go with the 3/4" range if possible. I got a bunch of different types of 3/4" knurls from ali express last year (erm, or so) for very little $. They seem very hard, but I do notice some small variation in ID. So, they might have to be ground to be uniform - but, price was good.

And .. no ... I've not yet made a knurling tool to hold them! "real soon now".
Greg.
EDIT: only last night I went through "tom's techniques" channel on his clamping knurling tool. Very nice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prlQ...MC3zYW6loyd4Gq

Hi Guys,
I bought a pair of knurling wheels from China last year, 3/4" X 1/4" bore. They are as hard as can be. But if your are looking for 6 mm bore, I couldn't find any.Best Regards:

Jack, yes. The bore. When I get there, I'll likely just use the dremel as a small tpg to make them consistent. When I get there!

Thanks John,
Bore is irrelevant as I will reaming the existing 7/32 hole out to suit the new size knurl. While I have a 6mm reamer and not a ¼" reamer, I reckon ¼" is going to offer me a lot more options. So I'll buy a ¼" reamer.
I don't doubt your knurls are hard. The Chinese can make hard steel. But are they accurate? Well matched? Sharp? Smooth surface finish? My research tells me these things make a difference to the result. Nothing worse than spending a lot of time on a project then marring it with crappy knurling (I've done that too many times).
I'm also going through a "no China" phase at the moment. I know it can't last.
Accu-Trak gave me these guys as an agent in the UK. Do you know them? Advanced Technology Machines
No website, so I've emailed them and asked for a price list. Hopefully they don't have minimum order limit like Accu-Trak.Chris

As far as buying knurls from China is concerned, If I remember correctly I only paid around £4 postage free for mine, what annoys me is the six weeks it took to get them and now they are quoting nine to twelve weeks, or having you pay almost as much again for express delivery, suggesting that you will get your order in seven to ten days. I've also noticed that they seem to want to deliver from Europe now. Russia, Czech Republic, Poland and Spain.

Certainly keen to share postage. My holder currently takes ⅝" x 5/16" x 7/32" knurls. Was considering modifying it to take ¾ x ⅜ x ¼ knurls. However, if can share the postage from Accu-Trak I'll probably leave it as is and buy ⅝ knurls.
I got a cryptic reply from Accu-Trak today saying the reason for the $100 minimum is because there's a lot of paperwork required to ship goods to India. Odd, given that I told her I live in Australia. I reiterated I'm in Oz and asked if that changed things. I guess I won't get a reply until next week now.Chris
