Thanks shed. I didn't think of the 'toolpost' keyword for searching. Doh.

Though, ebay on that search or some similar ones are not really showing up the t handle type. Just one in the UK. Wrong size though. At least that is what it shows me!

Hare and forbes has some metric ones, but the 12mm might be just a bit wobbly for 7/16" square nut.

Greg and others, if you get really stuck for one, you could make your own by Rotary Broaching. Here's a link to You Tube for How To Do It

A more versatile approach that means only grinding one HSS tool would be to drill the round hole and remove most of the material, then use a 1/4” HSS tool ground as a broach to cut the corners square using the quill of the mill as a press (could probably also use a drill press with some careful setup) Slow and no doubt tedious but way cheaper than a rotary broach setup. Joe Pi did a really good how to on it on YouTube that for the life of me I can’t find at the moment.
In the mean time, until I can be bothered either making or buying some, I’m just using 12pt sockets.

Kryn, tadpole, thanks. Specifically, I was wanting to avoid making something. I'm already like 7 layers of inception away from the thing I'm actually doing, like, fixing something that is to help make something to help test the accuracy of a thing I'm making to hold another thing that I'm making to help make a tool. That helps me makes stuff.

I like the 12 point idea. Cool. 👍

Adam, what sizes are you looking for? I have a 1/4" square broach and could do a small barrel for you if you are chasing that size; there are other cheats if the use is not going to be high torque

I’ll PM you on that Michael.

Greg, could you replace the fasteners with cap screws and use a hex drive instead?

Ha.....i think we all do that....make things to make things to make things...
A quick way to make a square socket is to bury an end mill into the end of length of rod, centered on 2 sides and the bottom, then run the end mill over the top at the height of the top of the square, prep and weld on a bit of plate to close the top then turn it to
the finished dia that you want.........boil the jug while you are doing it then you can have a cuppa...

Are you open to sockets with 8 points (also called double square)? A "T" handle and extension would complete the ensemble. There are also 4 point sockets but I can't find examples except for impact type.

shed, nice technique. Thanks. Easy way also to get a square hole in a boring bar.

tadpole, I guess I could replace them with caps screws, but, the machine is 80 years old next year and it still have those original bolts in fairly good nick, so, keep to keen them.

Pete, I've not heard to the double square thing. Thanks.

Funny you know, I thought it'd be simple to find once I figured what they were called. But .. nope! The mcmaster carr one for 7/16" is like $45 USD - that is quite some AUD coin once you get it landed n all.

Thanks all, if I do find some, I'll post here.

Does the application have to a tube spanner or could it be a flat type square drive ?

This is a 7/16" square spanner to suit an old Lock tool holder I picked up that I use for the tailstock on the Senecca - is it only 7/16" that you are after BTW?

Hi Ray, I was after the t handle type is it is for the taper attachment and clamp for the lathe. Things get a little cramped there.

There is no emergency though. I have a small spanner I use that does the job. Actually, it was kind of a "hey, wouldn't the proper tool be nice to use instead of a spanner" moment. I thought they'd be out there but I just didn't have the right search terms. Seems not!
