Tapered pipe threads - are the sockets usually tapered too?
Probably a really dumb question, but I've had a look online but can't get any clarity on what is standard practice.
I need to make a female socket that will have a 3/4" BSPT fitting or plug screwed into it.
The nipple is tapered, but are the female threads usually tapered too? Info online says they can be either, and the only female fitting I've got here to check is a ball valve (which is parallel).
Its only an oil drain plug so either way will seal OK, just interested as to what is considered to be "standard"...

All my pipe taps are tapered, and would make tapered holes. A tapered hole would hopefully increase the sealing area a bit.

BSP fittings
Hello Steve.
BSPP and BSPT fittings should not be mixed as the few threads that engage may strip before sealing. The parallel type are used for hydraulic or other high pressure fluid. The sealing is by way of an O ring, under the hex. BSPT fittings are designed to seal on the threads. There is some info on how many threads of a BSPT tap should protrude when full threading is complete on the web. If your making a socket you will have to grip it well.

You have to wonder about the wisdom of designing two pipe standards that shouldn't be mixed, but are able to be.

Not in all cases
They also use parrallel...but again one meeds to check refrigeration always use taper.
Thats how I have had so much trouble with refrig mechs going to the likes of Reece Plumbing...who also sell refrigeration products...mechs dont specify and counter staff dont know the customer wanted refrigeration fittings.
Need a lump of 2x4 to make some mechs understand tho.
