Cam Lock to screw n chuck
Hi all, having begun my tentative journey in learning machining on my lathe, and I'm having a blast......I wanted to replace the 3 jaw with the 4 jaw that came with the lathe. The 3 jaw is a Cam Lock, and that came off no problem. The 4 jaw is screw on. I've tried to find a solution but have been unsuccessful. Is there a procedure to remove the Cam Lock part so that I can install the 4 jaw chuck? It's a Sheraton 10 Conquest. Thanks.

Short answer no.
You would need to either put a camlock backing plate onto the back of the 4 jaw if it is a plain back chuck with screw on backing plate attached, if the threaded section is part of the chuck you would need to make a cam lock mounting plate with a screw thread to suit the chuck.

I wouldn't use a screw-on chuck if I had the option of cam lock. My Hercus 260 has a threaded spindle and it's a real pain. If you screw them on too hard they can be very difficult to remove. If you don't screw them on tight enough they can come off. I had my 4 jaw come off once when I switched the lathe off because I didn't screw it on hard enough. Luckily I was turning a long length of bar so the stock in the spindle bore kept the chuck from falling onto the ways. And miraculously there was no damage done to the bore. It must be well hardened. You can't run screwed chucks in reverse either.

If your chuck is not suitable you could sell it, you should be able to buy a camlock 4 jaw for that lathe for under $200.
I have seen the D1-4 to threaded nose adaptors homeshop made over the years, and screw adaptors for rotary tables.
They have had 2 lathes and want to use the same chucks in the shop.
For your coarse it wouldn't be worth it, as D1-4 is a better spindle nose system.Using Tapatalk

I think that your machine should have a D1-3 spindle when you are looking for either a backplate for a generic 4-jaw or a 4-Jaw with built-in D1 mounts.
There are heaps of references around the web that show the differences between D1-3, D1-4 etc - here is one with the dimensions in mm: https://www.smalltools.com/lathe-spi...ication-chart/
Post up a piccy of your 4-jaw showing the threaded mount.

As requested. Also, here are a couple of pics of a dog and a back plate, both cam lock. Funny how the 4 jaw is a screw type.

Looking at pic 2, the screw attachment should come off. If you then fit a camlock adaptor plate, you will have your four jaw functionality.

One thing to double check is the bolt pattern for that chuck against the bolt pattern for the applicable D1 backplate.
Those existing 4 mounting bolts are well toward the centre and could interfere with the 3 D1 mounting points + the locking screws.
This was something I ran into recently with a near new Bison 4-Jaw that I was planning to mount to a D1-4 backplate for my Hembrug.
You might be OK but something to check.

So I have identified that I need a D1-3 adaptor plate. I can't seem to locate one in Australia. There's plenty overseas but postage is a killer.
I have found one on ebay, but I always like to compare what is available.

Can anyone assist?

Same seller, but direct off the website:
http://www.mag-pro.com.au/goods.php?id=405
Note that price doesn't include GST, and the automatic shipping calculation on his site is normally useless. However, at $25 to ship 5kg, given you're in NSW, is probably not that terrible really, and at a total of $85.50, saves you a decent bit.
If you decide to buy more or other things though, make sure you email for a shipping price, as the website will add between $20 and $30 per item in your cart.

It appears that d1-3 adaptor plate looks close to what I need, however, the 4 mounting holes on my 4 jaw chuck are about the same position as the cam pins. See attached.
And my chuck is 5 7/8 diameter.
Any ideas?

Make a backing plate to suit your chuck then mount your D1-3 plate to that.
