AL-250G Lathe - Ball Oilers
Some of the ball oilers on my lathe are damaged. The ball sits below the upper seat and they don't do their job of sealing out crud. These oilers were clearly the result of unskilled installation. Just what you get with a cheap Chinese machine.
I measured the oilers as best as I could in-situ, and they seemed to be 6mm. This made sense given that it is a metric machine, so I ordered some from Ebay and they arrived in due course.
Ok. Time to start replacing the damaged ones. Start with the one in the cross slide hand wheel extension housing. (What else would I call it?)
I prised it out and discovered that the side had been sheared off during installation.
Ok. Now insert the new one. What?? It doesn't even look close to fitting. What size did MrEbay send me? Check with the micrometer, 6mm. Ok, that's what I ordered. Check the size of the hole with digital calipers, 5.75mm dia or thereabouts. Just about midway between a #1 and #2 drill size. Standard chopstick???
I decided to ream out the hole with a 6mm H7 reamer, cleaned out the crud then gently tapped the new oiler into place. Perfect fit!!
I proceeded to replace 4 more oilers. There are others that will need replacing, but they will need to wait. Cleaning out the crud after reaming the holes requires various amounts of disassembly.
Does anyone out there have any idea as to the wierd size of the original oilers? All of the ones I replaced were the same size.

Sorry can't help you with the Ball Oiler sizes, but your pics didn't come out.
Suggest that you use the Forums insertion of pics.

Strange about the pics not showing. Ok on my PC and also via my phone.
I'll try via insert.

Not too sure about the quality of these inserted pics. How do they look at your end Kryn?

Thanks for the heads up about the pics, Kryn & Dave.
I just tried inserting the pics into a reply but the reply seems to have vanished into cyberspace.
Here goes again.

Yep came through, good job.
Those oiler's sell for so much from local tool places, but as I found you can buy 20 for $3 from AliExpress, and they wonder why we don't buy local. There all coming out of China.
Yours where a strange size though, I haven't run into any problems like that, there either 6, 8 or 10mm.
One thing I did buy that maybe useful to you as well, is the 90 degree oil cups with the little flip lids sold on eBay and ali, these are for the tailstock end to oil the leadscrew, feed rod and forward reverse shaft on my 12x36 lathe.
Ball oiler's seem stupid in that area, where a cup you can just add a few drops and even put a bit of material in them to slow it down to a drip to keep them oiled as they only run on cast iron.Using Tapatalk

Ball Oilers
Looks like you could possible by swaging over the end of a spent 22 case (or larger) with a spring and ball bearing inside.
I'd try it but still working on getting the shed set up since moving house.

Dave. I like your idea of an oil cup for the lead screw.
Mine has a larger size ball oiler. Looks about 8mm so I measured it. 7.5mm or thereabouts.
Maybe they make these lathes full size then shrink them by some wierd factor.
