Default What did I buy, Drill Press

    Hello All

I purchased a drill press yesterday. It needs work and a tidy up, but the price seemed like something I could not go past.
The only thing is, I don't know what brand or era this drill press is. I would appreciate any tips or information. The only marking is 408 and it has a crompton 240 volt motor. The motor is not running at the moment.

    Thanks

    Steve

Looks like a Richardson drill press to me. My brother has one and it runs very well. Nice solid machine.

I'd say it's an early Richardson / Sterling by the looks of the forward belt guard & upper bearing support, as well as the bolts in front of the spindle to adjust play.

Thanks JohnQ and Monchochos. I spend about three hours last night trying to work out what it was, and I could have saved myself all of that time if I had came here first and ask the team of highly trained experts.

Now I know what it is, I would love to have a lead on reference material or approximate date.

    Thanks again

As the others have said, a Richardson, however both yours and the JohnQ has dont appear to have the external quill return spring arrangement on the end of the quill pinion. Dont know if they made some with the spring inside somewhere.
I have a pretty old one which I've had since the mid 1970's. It originally had a 3 speed flat belt drive on it. It doesn't even have a splined drive on the quill, instead it uses a sliding feather key. It also originally had a flat table that could only be rotated around the column.
It has a cast iron cap arrangement that the return spring fits inside that is attached to the LHS end of the pinion.
I'll take some pics of mine tomorrow (if I remember)

I've had my floor model since Aug 1993 & a bench model that I bought from Bwal74 in Nov 18. In this time I haven't found any info online.
The return spring is on the left side under the hand wheel which is not on Steve's model.

    Pics of my pedestal drill.

    John.
You have just saved me uploading pics of mine. Mine looks the same as your floor standing one where the return spring is.
Does this mean the one without the spring there does not have a return spring?

There was a floor standing one at work that had a super low reduction pulley set up on it (dont know if it was original or not though). Anyway it was eventually deemed to be unsafe (didnt have a current E stop on it) and taken out of service. I tried to buy it for myself but wasn't allowed as that might have been "corrupt". It eventually was taken out of that workshop and I have no idea where it went. Hopefully to someones shed and not in a skip.

Cleaning up an old drill press is great little garage project on a rainy weekend.

I bought an old Peerless for a song and cleaned it up, I love the old girl she is one of my most used tools now.

My E39 bench model has no return spring on the pinion and yet I've seen some of the same model that do. I forgot to take a photo but mine has a coil spring added that connects to the collar around the quill and goes up to the front belt guard. It doesn't look pretty but it works.

It would be interesting to know the history of these old machines. As I said in another post my machine was originally flat belt drive. It was old when I got it in the mid 1970's.
I wonder if the ones without the return spring were some sort of super sensitive model?

The of the drill with no spring housing is a pic I'd found sometime ago, mine is the one in Post 6. It has the low speed pulley assembly, Model OOW.
I got it when our workshop was closed in '93, when we moved. I've been told by an old work mate it could have been purchased in the early '60s.
The bench drill I got of Bwal74 has pulley covers & morse taper through, Model 839.

    Hi John,

I miss my old Richardson, I wish I didn't sell it now (like most of my older machines - shaper and Hercus Mill). I have a older Waldon now, I'll post photo's one day.

    G'day Ben

My 2 drill's & lathe haven't been used since early May. Moved out of Sydney, repainting house & trying to set up the shed.
At 108 sq meters it 5 times larger then the old single car garage, steel construction. So I'm putting up timber walls to hang
things off. The clear panels were shot & there was other leaks, so re-roofed the lot with insulation included.

Have to put something up for the fit out.
