Thread: Line Boring Video

Happened to come across this 22 minute video on YouTube, on line boring and repairing a bore for an excavator pin. I found it quite interesting to watch how the bore is built up by automatic MIG welding, subsequent line boring and pulling the bushes into place.

Interesting process indeed. I have never done line boring myself, but had a bit of a sticky-beek at a shop where a bloke was running the rig and getting it done.
Notwithstanding the setup which is considerable, there is a bit involved from the welding side as it is effectively a vertical up, overhead, vertical down, and in position weld in the one process. So having to get the welding power source (usually engine drive and a suitcase wire feed) dialed in to cater to all positions is a bit of a task.

I got to look at the welding process for a line boring job on a piece of big mining gear, the manufacturer suggested a butter layer of 7016, followed by a layer of a machinable hard surfacing alloy. Can't remember the wire though... probably needed though- the bucket on that excavator would scoop up a landcruiser with room to spare.

Line boring sucks. Was glad when i could palm it off to one of the other guys at work.
