Default Waldown c-0 tool post grinder first run & where does a belt guard mount?

    Hi all,

I have finally got around to mounting the Waldown C-0 TPG. Sitting on the compound it was a nice even 0.054" below center line so some alu plate and shimming required. I dressed the wheel as best I could and gave it a run on some scrap of unknown material.

Not too shabby at all for a first go. Okay okay, I'll confess ... a _second_ go. First go I just tried it without dressing the wheel. I'll not even show what that looked like. lesson: dress the wheel true.

So, results are promising. BUT, I have no belt guard for it and really I thought it'd be okay - I'd be careful. But with the motor spinning at 11000 rpm and that belt being exposed, and one concentrating on other things it is just a recipe for utter disaster. Really. And I'm not a card carrying safety zealot.

I have nothing to cover it with but maybe could jimmy up something - even an ice cream container would be better ... but where does a belt guard mount? I see no mounting holes or brackets. The parts diagram doesn't help and I see pics online with an arm extending out from the grinder body to under the belt guard. My grinder has nothing there at all for anything to attach to. from google pics you can see the mount in these pics:

Or is it possible the model I have did not have a belt guard? That'd be weird. Without a guard that little belt is hungry for human flesh ..

    All advice and help appreciated.

    Greg.

I just went and locked my shed so grabbed some pictures.
My C1 has inner and outer covers with 2x grub screws holding it in place.

    Greg,
From your photos you can just see a single standoff forward of the yolke bolt, this is the single support for the C-0 guard if one is lucky enough to have one, mine does not, so I suspect these were fairly flimsy in use. Nice results on the grind.

As far as I'm aware the early Waldown C0 didn't have a belt guard. Mine certainly does not and there is no provision for one.

I don't see any serious injury occurring as the motor head is spring loaded (for auto belt tension) and will easily kick back to accomodate any errant body parts that get in the way. Being a flat belt drive it will also slip and not cut like a "V" belt. You might get a skin burn or bruise, but the digit should still remain attached

In 15 years use I've never had any issues.

Things probably changed in later years when OH&S regs required covers for exposed drives.

Nice finish by the way. If you can find any, some cylinder head valve seat grinding stones can be made to fit, and the really fine grit ones give a polished finish.

    Cheers Rob

DaveJ - nice. Thanks for the pics. It seems then the C1 and the C0 have a different mounting arrangement. I had a closer look at the parts list and:

The C1 guard sure looks a lot more sturdy!

C-47 - yes - that standoff in the pics is the arm I was referring to. Looking at the parts list pic above it shows a mount point in the casting for it. My unit has no such thing, so, I am guessing it never had a belt guard.

Here is a greys online image showing a c0 with the arm and how it is mounted and you can just see under it a slot in the casting.

Maybe the belt guard was an optional extra with the C0 or something (or came with later C0 models maybe?). Interesting that yours does not also.

Thanks Rob - our posts crossed in mid-air I think.

Thanks re the info. It sure looks like it never had a guard. Okay - I'll go back to being 'careful' then!

Thanks also re grinding stone tip. I'll also get some of the smith and arrow discs you recommend as well.

You won't get as good a finish as in your picture with those Smith & Arrow discs, but I find them very useful for getting into corners, reducing, facing.

Larger wider stones tend to be a bit unmanageable or even useless on tight small jobs. Cutting discs generally don't have the finest of grit levels, but are still acceptable for a lot of basic work.

Plus of course, they can cut off really neatly and well.

    Cheers Rob

    Hi Rob,
You could well be correct. The Waldown manual I have dated 1982, does show a guard, some other general info is maybe of use. Alan.
