Default Shaper feed screw jamming ????? Help needed.

    Hello to all.
Please combine your many years of experience and find me an answer.
Last weekend the shaper crossfeed screw became difficult to operate. I lubed it all, cleaned the screw and oiled it, backed off the gibbs, cleaned them and reinstalled. It got that hard to turn the hand wheel I decided to strip it down and remove the swarf that was obviously in the shaft nut. The hand wheel and ratchet gear are roll pinned to the shaft and the only endplay adjustment is the two nuts on the other end. I took the hand wheel off and the drive cover with the feed lever as well. To my surprise I could turn the shaft with the ratchet easily. It is now easy to thread thru the nut. I can't easily remove the screw as it is burred a bit where it has worked in the nut but it came out 250mm and was in fine condition. There is no galling or pick up in any part and it was all dripping in oil.
This all happened once before and the result was put it back together and it was perfect. Today will see it go back together after a good deburr but I'm scratching my head. How can it jam up and show no sign of distress. Even the part of the screw most used showed no signs of pick up or damage.
    Your thoughts?

Default Shaper feed screw jamming ????? Help needed.

The only things I can think of over the years that have behaved like that have had some sort of play in them and end up with something cocked/wedged.

Pulling them apart removes the jam, a bit of cleaning or lube stops it happening again for a while.

    I agree !
I've had that happen a couple of times with my saw bench. The rise and fall screw decides to jam and taking the screws out of the block frees it until the next time.

I'm of the opinion that a bit of swarf cocks the bearing for the nut and it binds.

    Default Shaper trouble.

Hello again. I did a good inspection while I had the feed gear apart and the wear is minimal. Most parts still have machining marks. It is a low hours machine. Today I thought of the housing that goes from the ratchet to the feed adjustment drive gear. The whole lot can swivel to align and may be putting pressure on the casting. When I fired it up there was no oil pressure. I removed the action cover and found a congealed ball of oil around the pick up strainer. So, more pics next week.
At least today was model steam train club action.
