New (to me) Machinists Vice
Hi all.
Its me again.
Just got a new acquisition. A machinists vice. I think its an Australian made vice ... the graduations on turn table are in mm.
Im pretty happy with myself. Its soooooo heavy and sooooo solid but it moves smoother than the newer vice i got, and feels so much better to use.
Dont think ill do anything to it just yet. oh i lied did put some oil on it and it literally glides... not moves but glides.
only down side is that its missing a handle in the back.
was wondering if anyone had a spare handle lying around?? love to hear from ya. the measurement where the crank would go is just under 17mm as youll see from the pics tell me what ya think.
Regard Mr GS

Hi Mr GS,
Before using it in anger check that it is truly parallel to the mill table ! Check it rotated at 90 degrees and that the fixed jaw is vertical across its whole length. As far as a drive key is concerned I just use an adjustable wrench.
The graduations should be in degrees !Best Regards:

I suspect the graduations are in degrees, not length...

My new vise never came with a handle many years ago, something the seller couldn't explain, but rewarded me with a endmill set.
I just use a old sliding T handle with a socket. I drilled the socket and put a grub screw in to stop it coming off and that is how it has been for at least 13 years.
Doesn't get in the way because I can slide the handle to the other side, and plenty of leverage.Using Tapatalk

I might have a vice handle for you, but I need to check the dimension of the square which I will do tomorrow and let you know.

Many thanks and More aquisitions.
Hi all.
thanks for the info... you can see that im new to this it now seems pretty straight forward that the mesurements would be in degrees on something that rotates hahaha
some good ideas aswell.
That ill be greatly appreciated steran50 let me know either way.
Just wanted to say sooo many places to get good items that people are litterally throwing away today picked myself up a DAWN 4 1/2 SP vice, about 45 morse taper drill bits, 2 Rabone Chesterman Squares, an assortmant of g clamps drill bit size gages and some forging tongs will include some photos later but im happy with the vice it reminds me of my dads Dawn vice he use to have when i was a kid. I use to squish my lego men that lost battles in them haha
that vice is deffinetly gonna be my next project. for sentimental reasons pictures to come

I can probably make you a handle if you don’t find one elsewhere and don’t want to use a 12pt socket. Although you may need to use a socket short term I have a bit going on at the moment

New (to me) Machinists Vice
Although I now have the shaper and can make square holes, in the past I noticed that push bike crank arms with the tapered square holes would make good donors for machine handles.
You’d just need to file the taper parallel and maybe adjust the size slightly.
Alloy is decent, and they have the pedal thread and axle for a handle if you want. Some come with a bit of an offset too, and you have a variety of colours and lengths to chose from!

I found the Vice Handle and it measures pretty close to what you need and if anything you may actually have to file it slightly. It came off a Vice basically the same as the one you have that I bought off Titan Machinery which wasn't a very good vice. The handle is yours if you want it. Vice Handle.jpg

Ah the same place I bought my anglelock one, and mine was missing the handle straight out of a unopened box. I think I paid $220 for it back then. As I said he fixed me up so no complaints and I hope his business goes well.
I can't complain about this vice, it has served me well and is spot on accurate even before I totally surface ground it just because, lol
Totally off topic, but have you seen on his FB page a couple of years ago of the mini mill someone returned after a full refund.
They either dropped it in the lake, or covered it with salt and water, totally rusted like it had been out in the elements for 10 years and totally destroyed it, no need to do that to a Aussie seller that had already refunded the money. I have always found him to be honest.
If anyone wants I'll grab a picture or a link.Using Tapatalk
